Even the best of swimmers fail to return, as was demonstrated when the lake claimed the life of one of our prominent citizens last week. + The Park Board has for some time had signs posted at| DiamondgPoint warning bathers not to go in the water below the point, where the so-called “drop-off” is located. This has served to some extent to make the bathers more cautious, and very few infractions of the order have been noted. i Although Mr, Elletson, who was considered one of the best swimmers in Bemidji, did not break any rules set by the Park| Board, nevertheless, he.lost his life, The danger of the deep water seems to lay' with those who are good swimmers and are confident of their ability. The others would not attempt to go out into ‘water much over their heads. ; | ——0 ‘A NEW ONE FOR BEMIDJI Bemidji spent the Fourth of July differently this year than in many years past. The city was well represented at the! vari- ous nearby towns and villages where celebrations were ‘held, and through these representatives a spirit of co-operation was carried to our neighbors. Speakers were supplied from Be- midji for a number of cities near here, while others were visited merely by auto loads of boosters. The Northern Minnesota Fair, which is to be held at Be- midji, September 20-23, was well advertised on these trips, and, it is safe to say, that at least five people will be ‘brought here to the fair for each person who went out of town to celebrate the Fourth, That.is one way in which Bemidji will reap the returns. And then again, we will be in far better position to put on a real celebration next year, with practically every neighboring|- town and community to draw visitors from, in return for our! spirit of co-operation this yegr. These towns which were visited | this year by Bemidji people will naturally look forward to re- turning the compliment next year. Dimanris ENCOURAGE THE GARDENERS Pupils of the Bemidji public schools are keeping school |« a gardens in good shape this summer despite the hot weather and | “Hatcher Bros. Corporation, Fargo, the various lures of the regular summer vacation period. Much interest is being shown by the boys and girls, and 18 of these . youths have been placed on the “no weeds” list because of the condition of their gardens. 8 Anyone who is interested is welcome to visit the gardens|. to see what has been and is being accomplished. - Parents of the gardeners are especially urged to visit them. The gardens at the school farm and also those near the Lincoln school are being well taken care of and the youthful gardeners should be encouraged in their work. The chances are that right now they can tell the old folks a lot of things about taking care of a garden. TR S LOOK IT OVER, ANYWAY . .
