Webster =Man’s Man ———— By PETER B. KYNE Aathor of “Cappy Ricks,” “The Valley of the Giants,” etc. (Copyright, by Peter B. Kyne) (Continued from Page 2) smoke ‘that marked’ the approach of La Estrellita—on schedule time. “You will go aboard her tonight,” Webster said very quletly to Dolores. “And you?” “I shall go aboard with you. I have arranged with Don Juan for him to y ashore and to come out in Le- be launch with the first reliable news of the conflict. If Ricardo wins the- city, he wins the revolution, and you and I will then go ashore—to dine with him in the palace. If he loses the city, he loses the revolution, and we will both do well to remain aboard La- Estrellita.” - “and in that event, what will be-| come of my brother?” 1 “I do not know; I forgot to ask him, but if he survives, I imagine he'll have sense enough to know he’s whipped and will retreat on San Bru- no, fighting a rear guard action, em- bark aboard the steamer that brought lis men there, and escape.” “I'm worrled about Mother Jenks.” “I have asked Mother Jenks to dine with us at 7:30 this evening, and have orlered a carriage to call for her. When she comes I'll tell her every- thing; then, if she wishes to stay ashore, let her. She’s been through more than one such fracas and doesn’t mind them at all, I dare say.” And in this Webster was right. Mother Jenks listened in profound sl-f lence, nodding her approval, as Web- | ster related to her the story of the| advent in the country of Ricardo Ruey and his plans, but without revealing the identity of Andrew Bowers. At the conclusion of his recital the ! old publican merely said: “Gor’ DIT, me!” i After a silence she added: “My sainted 'Enery used to s'y the proper| hodds for a white man in a bally row o' this nature was 40 to 1. Gor', but| how my sainted 'Enery would henjoy! Dein’ 'ere this night to ’elp with the guns.” She sighed. “How about a little bottle of wine; to drink peace to your sainted Henry and luck to The Cause?” Webster suge| gested. 1 “That's wot I calls talkin’,” Mother Jenks responded promptly, and Web- | ster, gazing reflectively at the old lady’s beard, wondered why she had not been born a man. o o (Continued in Next Issue) i RED TAPE AND DELAY ! Well burned clay or shale tile once in the ground, say the engineers, is practically everlasting. But some- times it is not well burned. Well made concrete tile in the ordinary up- land soil has never been known to break down, according to the engi- neers. But sometimes it is not well made and then both manufacturer and | user suffer. ““Minnesota is dependent upon con- crete tile for its development,” says| G. R. B. Ellirtty o€ tha ur'et Clas gineering. “It costs too much pej acre to do a compieie yow w.wn vy or shale tile, especially in the north ~nd in districts of the state remote from railroads. We must have ce- ment tile, but the tile must be good.” Tests and reports on tile sub~'**adq by farmers or manufacturers will be ' made free of charge. Advice on mix- | tures of aggregates will also be given | manufacturers if requested. At least five tiles per test should be sent pre- paid to the drainage section, Univer- sity farm, St. Paul.
