Spare me. I've heard all I want to hear about your confounded consolidation. News! News! Give me news! I have to beg for a drink— Mose, you black sinner, how dare you appear before me, without bringing 8 drink?” Mose, the aged colored porter of the Engineers’ club, flashed a row of ivories and respectfully returped the democratic greeting. “Letter for you, suh. The secre- {ary told me to give it to you, Mistah Webster.” “Thank you, Mose. Speak up, Ned- dy, and tell me something. Ever hear anything of Billy Geary?” e was tearing the edge of the en- velope the while he gazed at Jerome, who was rubbing his fat hands to- zether after the fashion of elderly men who are well pleased with themselves. “You have a chance to become one’} of the greatest and richest mining en- | gineers ‘in the world, Jack,” he an- swered;; “now that you've cut loose Trom that young crook Geary. I don’t Ynow what's become of him, and neither does anybody clse. For that matter, nobody cares.” “I do—and you can take the brief end of that bét for your last white chip. Don’t let me hear you or any- hody eclse say anything against Billy Geary. That boy gees for my money, every turn in the box. Don’t make any mistakes about that, oldtimer.” Webster's face suddenly was serl- ous; the bantering intonation in his volce was gone, and a new, slightly strident mote had crept into it. But Jerome waved his hand soothingly. “All right, old Johnuy Pepper-box, have it your own way. Nevertheless, I'm a little mystified. The last 1 knew of you two, you had testified against him-in the high-grader trials at Cripple Creek, and he had pulled out under a cloud, even after his ac- quittal.” (Continued in t Issue) 1 R KE R R R KKK XD LAKE HATTIE *| 2 SR S S Sl Mr. and Mrs. Glen Allen gnd Mr.| and Mrs. John Lushen were' callers at the Geo. (By mail.)—Rumor has it that General von Ludendorff is be- hind the scheme in the revolutionist movement in Bavaria. He is, however, too clever to let his hand appear openly in the situa- | tion there, just as he was too clever to be “caughfi.with thd goods on” when the Kapp Putsch came; though it was significant he was.one of the carliest callers at the Kapp chancel- lory. .l - Many Germans believe that Luden- Jorff is living for the day when he could be hailed as the “savior of Germany.” But, reasonable persons from both the conservative and radical camps credit him with too much sense to be actually leading an armed uprising which might only bring entente troop{ pouring into the Ruhr or an entente air fleet blasting: German cities. The whole situation in Bavaria and elsewhere does not, however, rest 'in ‘the hands of Ludendorff or men of his calibre. There are many hotheadg.and these may prevail, just as they did in the Kapp Putsch. The Bavarian ‘“revolution” has been touted very strongly of late, especially cince the entente insisted upon dissolution of citizens’ guards arganizations there. There is plenty of material there for a coup, bent on re-establishing monarchy; there are weapons and well organized groups to do the ‘“revoluting,” should the signal be given. The situ- ation is such that a prophecy.would ;be dangerous. It can only be said; jthat most of the advertised-in-ad- i vance revolutions: don’t happen in' { Germany—or, if they do, they don’t; ilast long. It is likely that if the reds jare kept under control this winter,; {the Potsddm Putsesh group will find | Ilittle occasion to cut loose. | However, one thing is certain, i Ludendorff isn’t sitting in Munich | |i¢ enjoy its famous works of art.' fe ken’t in tueeh with a lot ot re- actionaries 'just simply because he] needs society.
