MORO A DANGEROUS FANATIC Believes Eternal Bliss to Be His If He Meets Death While Killing Christians, The psychology of Mohammedanism 18 Incomprehensible to persons reared in the atmosphere and teachings of American Obristianity. With us the separation of church and state s as much a matter of course as the alr we pmthe. With_us suicide 1s immoral and the Irllllng of an unbeliever is a crime punishable with death. The Mo- hammedan has no conception of ecclest- astical and state law. There s only law, the Koran; and while in fact !lu priest and the ruler may be dif- | ferent persons, they are different only in a functional way, like a judge and an executive in our government. The 'plrltual ruler is also temporal ruler, as was Mohammed In his day. The killing of Christians is a virtue that merits everlasting bliss in paradise. The martyrs of the early Christlan <burch burned with no more consum- ing ardor than the humble, ignorant ‘Mohammedan peasants who sweur be fore the priest that they will go forth and devote their lives to Kkilling Chris- tians. Mohammedans who have sworn to kill Christians are called in the Philippines juramentados, from the Spenish, meaning one who has sworn or ‘taken an oath. Up to a decade ago 4t was no uncommon occurrence in Jolo for a Moro fanatie to conceal his bolo knife, or kris, in a basket of fruit until he had passed the guard at the gate of the walled town, then draw his blade and cut right and left, ling, man, woman or child, with perfect impartlality, until a bullet from the guard stopped his advance. It was this indomitable will to kill that gave the Christian Filipino his mortal fear of the Moro in times past.—O. Garfleld Jones, In Asia. Asparagus Has a Pedigree. Asparagus was cultivated in Rome 200 years B. C., and Pliny, in his “His- tory Naturalls,” mentions that near Ravenna there grew a kind of which three heads weighed a pound. Aspar- agus flourished also in Greece. It is a native of several places near the sea in Britain. At Kynance cove, in Cornwall, a rocky Island is called “As- paragus island,” because at ome time the plant was cultivated there. In an- clent days all sprouts of young vege- tables were called asparagus; and in comparatively modern times the arti- choke, cardoon, seakale and alisander were included. Nowadays only the one 18 so called. Most probably all are wild sea-coast plants, and culti- vated asparagus of an unpalatable or- der may still be found on British shores. lowing items: Subscribe for The Daily Pioneer.'i Attention PRINTERS AND PUBLISHERS We have moved into our new building and have added considerable new machin- ery, including a Duplex printing press, an automatic press, a miller saw trimmer, new fonts of type, new stones, storage cab- inets, ete. A curlous festival was held not long ago In Mandalay, the chlef town of Burma. A new pagoda dedicated to the Buddhist religion was to be com- pleted by the placing of a huge crown or thi upon its summit, more than 800 feet above the ground. To witness the ceremony came Bud- dhists from Indo-China, from the Himalayas, from Laos and Chan and Slam. Warrlors from Katschin, Sorcer- ers from Mot and people from other ' places made a medley of languages like that at Babel. On a street corner would be seen & barber pulling a customer’s tooth. On another corner a Mohammedan bird dealer sold caged paroquets to Bud- dhists who piously set them free. At very modern booths one could buy lce cream, soda or tea, Mandalay was & gorgeous spectacle and the new pagoda was the center of it. Every pagoda. has at its summit a thi, or cap, the piacing of which is of- ten a herculean task. The one now to be raised weighed several hundred pounds and consisted of a glided ball and crown and a great spindle above 1 To get 1t to the top an inclined plane of bamboo scaffolding like a huge to- boggan slide had been built, and was decorated with silk flags and umbrel- las. Up the inclined plane the heavy cap was slowly pulled. Six days were required for the ascent and a seventh to fasten it in place. Where Kansas Woman Drew the L'ne. “Incompatibility of religious temver- ament” was one of the reasons given for a divorce. The wife testified she didn’t mind so much her husband be- ing a Holy Roller. What she balked at was his coming in at three o’clock in the morning and saying he had been studying the Book of Revalat with a friend.—Topeka State Ji .
