THRUS, commca _ SAY THOSE WHO KNOW L0 South Amemh Offers Vast Opportumtles for After- War 'l'rnde Y By \H B._ Robertson ‘(W’r!tten for the United Press). ' New? York, August 3.—Much has ‘been said and written ‘recently, by : ‘those who ‘are interested in Pan-Am- ‘erican “affairs, in regard to what the /"United Statées must ‘do’*“‘to hold” the Arade ‘that has: been estabished in Brazil since; the great war crippled ./ 'Europe’s. exportation factlities: {7 " To the student 'of conditions in Bouth America,” however, it- would ibe a matter of surprise if the Ameri< «cans’ do-,not only “hold” the trade ‘they. have established, but did, not 'co_ntlnue to'give that trade a steady «. :expansion. The reason for this opti- ‘mism is that American trade now en- . Joys facilities and accommodations "'that did not exist. before the war, 4".American trade, in" Brazil in par- ‘ticular, and in ‘South America in r-géneral, may be likened to'a tripod, sthe‘three legs of ‘which are financial, transportatg n, “'and communication facilities..' Before the war none of ‘these facilities were in the hands of ‘the*Americans, ‘There are now American-banks in ‘all of the ports and, principal cities of Brazil; American ships are carry- ‘in; merican cgrgoes to that coun- and- American ‘owned cables link e two largest Américan. countries. - Plans for: ibetter service in each of these three important services are in ‘the course of execution, and there is ‘no reason to believe that the near fu- - ture will not see American trade in- - -terests enjoying -every accommoda- ‘tion' that formerly gave supremacy ‘to‘our ‘Buropean competitors. “The war gave the United States a ‘wider interest in exportation and for this: ‘reason -the subject of “What ‘Brazil needs” is receiving increasing # attention. It is. common knowledge .- that Brazil, being a country seeking facilites and manufactures. Some of three things the United States is pre- pared to supply. - It is not so well known, however, that in return Brazil is prepared to supply many of the needs of the United States. Brazil -is prepared to furnish raw materials in vast variety and in unlimifed quantity. Many of ! giythese raw materials are .certain to 4 come into huge demand in the United ~Slates with the expansion of Ameri- * can manufacturing industry. One example of this, an' example ‘that serves for hundreds of others, is iron. The great ranges of northern * + development .of its resources, needs| capital, - immigration, ‘transportation’| PRESENTS Minnesota are not»lnexhaus‘tlblei If /| the steel ‘and ‘iron industry of the United: States depended exclusively on the iron deposits within our own borders, it would not be many years| before our mills would be shut down: for lack of material. . Brazil’s iron resources.are enorm- ous. ' In the not distant future Bra- zilian ore will be sought by the Am- erican mills. Brazil’s huge .depos- its of minerals, its"boundless forests, and its limitless: agricultural "areas, all assure return cargoes to: the ships that carry American manufactures to Brazil. " They also offer = guarantee against’ 'future shortage of materials in this country. " When 1 first went to. Brazil, seven years ago, I made the trip on a Euro- pean 'passenger ship from New. York to:Rio de: Jameiro. .There were no American: ships on this route. The voyage .required twenty-three days. ' The trip.can now be made in fourteen days.. Within the next five. years it will:be-made in ten days, or less. Five or six years ago, only two or| ihree. American cargo ships entered the harbor of Rio de Janeiro in a year. They are now entering at the rate of from five to.seven a week. few .years ago it was an extremely rare ‘thing: to see American made goods in the shop windows of any ‘| Brazilian ‘city. Those same windows now’ display American wares almost to the-exclusion of all others. The war made tne expansion of American trade in Brazil possible, because ‘the’' European manufacturers were’ unable to deliver the goods and because the Americans had- few fa- cilities with which to establish trade. 'Before the War American goods were obliged to seek ‘the market through European agents; shipments were made in European ships, and pay- ments ‘were made through European banks, at European rates of exchange. Majl and cable communications were exclusively in the hands of the Eu- ropeans.” In other 'words American trade, such as it was, was handled by its Eutopean competitors. This situation has been complete- 1y changed. American trade in Bra- zil is'now in the hands of Americans. Its financing is handled by American banks, and its lines of communica- tion are American. The prestige of “Made in..the U. S.-A.” has been thoroughly estahllshed {tfes “for investigation and protection in Brazil -thru ‘the American banks and American methods are well liked in that country, the many statements to the contrary notwithstanding. \Brazil is a land of limitless oppor- tunity. In territory it is larger than the United States; its resources and undeveloped wealth stagger the im- agination. In days not long gone by it was advised, “Go West young man, and"grow up with the country.” There is no reason to believe that the American will not be just as quick as his European competitor in seeking the great opportumity that lies in the new “west” in Brazil.. - o 'lake tomorrow.
