Kathryn® Willlams is one of the ‘best known performers on the screen having established an enviable repu- tation as a star years before some of the present screen celebrities had embarked in the business. In the role of the designing business wo- ‘man who comes between a husband and his wife, Miss Williams displays artistry which will make most photo- play devotees concede that she 18 among the foremost actresses now .appearing before the camera. Leat- rice Joy plays the wife in a highly acceptable manner and Roy Stewart portrays the difficult role of the hus- dand in a way to win sympathy for the part all the way through. FEATURES AT ELKO TONIGHT As a cabaret dancer who injects some of the jazz from his system into an antiquated jug business ana makes a brilllan success out of it, Wallace TReid proved thoroughly entertaining in his latest Paramount Artcraft photoplay, “The Dancin’ Fool,” at the Elko last night, where he again ap- pears tonight. Mr. Reid--has the role of ‘‘Ves” Tibble, fresh from the country, who becomes a clerk for his Uncle Enoch _in New York at six dollars a week. Enoch has never even heard of type- writers and runs his jug business ac- cording to 1850 methdds. Breezy Wallie is equally at home as the live-wire businéss man and the graceful dancer. Bebe Daniels ehows new powers as an appealing screen heroine in the role of Junie *Tully Marshall, Raymond Hatton, and _Lillian Leighton are also in the cast. Other features at the Elko are “The Alligator Hunt”, a thrilling short subject,, a_two:part comedy and the special muéical program. LIVELY ACTION IN NEW RUSSELL FILM Suspense, surprises, thrills and ro- mance crowded fast one upon another in “The Lincoln Highwayman,” the new William Fox feature based on the great stage -success by Paul Dickey, which will be shown for the last times tonight. at the Grand theatre with ‘William Russell as the star. From the beginning one realizes that there must be some trick in Jimmy Clunder apparently turning bandit. The problem increases - in interest as the situations develop, and it is not solved till ‘the-last few: minutes of the feature. The setting of ‘the play -is cer- tainly unusual. The locations along the Lincoln Highway are of great pictorial beauty. i But-the chief interest of the play] lies ‘'in its suspense, which .is well sustained. The final surprise effect- ually turns the tables on the rival ‘Wooer. Lois Lee makes a very attractive. heroine, around whom iucn of the action revolves. The Hall Room Boys in *“In Pretty, Soft” will complete the program. MARGUERITE AND LARRY Marguerite Clark is the star in a new Paramount Artcraft screen com- edy, “Easy to Get” which will be showi at the Elko theatre Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The story concerns-a young bride on her honeymooti, who overhears her husband remark to a friends that all women are ‘‘easy to get.” She deter- mines to show him how “easy’ she is and. alighting Secretly from the train, walks into a complicated and humorous series of adventures that finally -ends happily. Harrison Ford is the leading man in an excellent supporting cast. - b “The Fly-Cop” which will also be shown at the Elko theatre on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday is a splendid ex- ample of Larry Semon's original me- thod of making a comedy. Its fun is as clear cut as the humor in any of his famous cartoons of bygone days. There is not a false stroke. Every line, every shading, is true to life, but exaggerated in such a subtle manner as to be excruciatingly fun- ny. And that is the strength of the Semon comedies. They get their fun from every day incidents without in- troducing abnormal situations. They are just funnily funny. An additional feature attraction will be music by the Elko orchestra Sunday evening. REX—TODAY and SUNDAY How a city youth who wouldn’t ‘~take a dare until an entire commun- ity in condemnation of a defenseless £irl for whom the fates had provided nothing better than a memory of a distressing early life served as the . basis for the exciting human story that is told:in “The Fighting Shep- ‘herdess,” starring Anita Stewart and which will begin a two day engage- ment at the Rex theatre commencing today. As Kate Prentice, daughter of the proprietress of a roadhouse about whom the. sheep-herding community of western California knew- very lit- tle, Miss stewart is.called upon to dis- play a “charactepization which in vigorousness has not been equalled in her screen. career to date. Picture a girl in whom nature has reposed the elements of refinément, struggling against the advances of uncouth men who frequent the tavern of which her mother was-the proprietor. Story Follows Book. A most novel plot has been pro- vided for this picture. Kate is taken away from the tavern as a result of a kindliness on the part of a recluse sheep herder who saves her from the apprQaches of a notorious character. 1t is through this opportunity that Kate 18 enabled to meet Hughie. viss- ton, an easterner, who befriends her. Suspected as the murderess of the man who enabled her to leave the unwholesome atmosphere of the tav- ern, battling against out-law cattie- men who are determined to make her leave the district, finally as the wealthy owner of a big sheep ranch and the person to whom the com- munity is thankful for .alleviating their difficulties, Miss Stewart has a role of splendid possibilities that give ample opporaunity for the dis- play of her histrionic ability. It is per haps the first time that a woman has ever been shown in motion pic- tures as the keeper of a western roadhouse, though in the old days many: followed that occupation. It is Does Your Bank Check SAY? also_the first time art has ever taken part in a’western play in western garb. Fresh from Broadway with sever- al trunks filled with the latest styles in clothes, footwear and headgear, Miss Stewart laughed when the gar- ments’ that she was ‘called upon te wear were pointed out to her. Good naturedly she laid away her finery and donned high-heeled boots, buck- skin skirt, broad brimmed hat and shootin’ irons to play “the fighting shepherdess.” A cast of eleven pflndnnls supports Miss Stewart in this production. Among those who appear in the pic- ture are: Wallace MacDonald, Noah Berry, walter Long, Eugenie Bes- serer, John Hall, Gibson Gowland, Calbert Carter, Bill DeVall, Maude ‘Wayne, Ben Lewis and Will Jeffries. REX MONDAY" Tt there, is any ‘race of people of which much pas been heard and little known it is the gypsies. In Romany, “Where Love Runs Wild”, which will be the attraction at the Rex theatre on Monday the director went to Scotland to get the real thing instead of faking as: has heretofore been done in pictures in which gyp- sies are part of the story. It was an American director who had the cour- age to do this unusual thing and Am- erican like he succeeded in pursuad- ing a gypcy band to let him turn the trick where every other director had failed. The scenery of the Highlands in Scotland have been utilized to the fullest advantage in giving to this feature picture a background that is original in every detail. It is chock full of romance ang daring adventure. It has thrills, comedy and heart inter- est and should be one of the most popular offerings seen at the Rex the- atre. Subscribe for the Ploneer.
