fi‘l’)'l:smv EVERING, MAY 11, 1920 ) 1 BAPTISTS FULLY ORGANIZED: WiLL RAISE BIG FUND Notable Men in 34 States Lead Churches in $100,000,000 Drive. IS TEST OF DENOMINATION. New World Movement Gains Momen- tuqr—when the Money Will Go. By LUPTON WILKINSON. The eyes of the Protestants every- where will be directed towarci North- ern Baptists between Sunday, Aprill 25, and Sunday, May 2. The 10,666 churches constituting the Northern Baptist Convention—noted for independence of action—have fit~ ted themselves with iron-clad unity into a temporary but none the less .. powerful machine. On May 2 the ma- chine will cease .to exist, but in the meantime it is expected to have raised the Imposing sum of $100,000,000. Leaders say. that probably never be- fore have the laymen and laywomen of ‘& denomination put their shoulders more completely to the wheel in a re- ligious undertaking. In each of 34 states some man of marked ability bas . given his entire time for the past two months to the building of a campaign Organization that reaches into every Jocal church, The state directors In- clude such men. as ex-Governor Run- yon of New Jersey, Smith G. Young, financier, of Lansing, Mich.; ex-Gov- ernor William W. Stickney of Vermont and Dr. John W. Baily, president of Oelorade Womien'’s College, Denver. The lay organization extends down fnte each of (10,688 churches. D. C. Shull of Sioux City, Ia., president of the Northern Baptist Cenvention, sum- med up its challenge as follows: “Those thousands of Baptists who learned the discipline and efficiency of ' planned.campaigning. while they were serving their country during the war can now apply that knowledge in the performance of the greatest task the Baptist” denomination "has ever faced * @8 a_unit. Thousands of others caa bring their talents for use in a drive that will combine modernity of method with deep spiritual ‘realization of s world in need. - “Surely it can be said with all rever- - emce that no greater crisis has com- fvronted evangelical Christians since . these early days when, after the Ascension, a band of determined men et out on the initial effort to make faith in the Master worldwide.” The gréat momentuin which the New World Movement of Northern Baptists bas achieved is due te many men, but %0 those in touch with its progress twe sames stand out. - P Dr. John Y. Altchison, director of the General Board of Promotion of the WNerthern Baptist Convention, s man of wausual personal maegnetism and win- sing character, has set the important | § campaign conferences op fire in every section of the country. Standing shoul- der to shoulder with him is Dr. Frank | B W. Padelford, head of the Baptist |} Board of Education, Charged with the administration of 68 schools and col- leges, Dr. Padelford nevertheless found sime to write the survey on which the | & approaching campaign is based and is | 33 alding heavily in the actual drive. “The task before us,” Dr. Aitchison sald in a recent interview, “will stand |3 or fall by one test. Are our people strong enough i» their faith and vision to forget the old measurements of urch giving? If they will realize the ristian crisis which exists, if they |5 . will hear the call of the whole world | g ‘for help, and for the supreme soul-help | & of the Man of Galilee, there can be no | & possibility ef holding back.” The proposed $100,000,000 fund will B be used for the expansion of forty Bap- tist schools and colleges in the United States; the enlargement of missionary sctivities in all foreign fields of the de- momination; Christian Americaniza- tien work among “new citizens” in the United States; an adequate pension- ing fund for missioparies and minis- ters and kindred purposes. Approxi- mately three-fourths of the money will e spent in this country. Subscribe for the Ploneer. —_—————— Every loyal citizen is glad to do his bit for the general good of our community.
