This is but one of the novel features being introduced this year in this season’s drive to make the county fiyless. New York, April 29.—Captain Gypsy Pat Smith, noted evangelist, and Miss Karin Maria Tjader are to be married here at 4 o’clock this aft- ernoon at the Fifth Avenue Presby- terian church. Captain Smith served during the war as captain of the Northumber- lund Fuliseers. Miss Tjader is the daughter of Mrs. C. Richard Tjader, of New York, and her father was a noted explorer and writer who came to this country from Sweden. " Captain Gypsy Pat Smith is twen- ty-five years old, and is of historic gypsy ancentry, born in a tent. He was on a vessel in Glasgow, booked to sail for this country, on August 4, 1914, when the war being declared he debarked and became one of the Lord Lovat Scouts. In action on the Somme in July 1916, his regiment had 828 men and 28 officers, and only 119 returned alive. Captain Smith crawled for a day and a night back to his line with a smashed left arm and thigh. Atfer nineteen months in hospitals he was discharged from the service, but when the March (1918) drive began he volunteeted a second time and as a captain of -the Fortieth Division was in heavy action at Armentieres, Rou- baix and Lille. Before the armistice he was strick-~ en with,pneumonia and on his recov- ery again- embarked for the: United’ States. He preached here in the Met- ropolitan Temple and delivered Liber- ty Loan speeches.
