\General Election May 10; Hara : + Government Is Los ih‘z Support 5 By Henry W. Kinney > (United Press Staff CorresnonQent) Toyko, March 18 (By mail)—The tme for the general election which is elect members to the Diet, to take :Ia place of that which was suddenly |. dissolved recently, has been set for May 10, and tremendous interest is '\balng taken in the event, With both sides determlned to fight to the lsst ditch. The government has given out that the Department of Justice, which will . have control of; the election, will take most stringent measures in order to revent disturbances or irregularities, n.nd that it ‘will take drastic steps against anyone found to be interfer- ing with the working of the machin- ery. ‘While sdon’after the dissolution of . the Diet it was generally believed that -the government would have a comparatively easy chance of victory, owing to the fact that the party in power always has a great advantage, this belief appears now to be chang- ing'.to some extent. This is because ot the fact that many of the business men, who have -always been the strong supporters of the Hara busi- . ness government, are now coming out in opposition to. 'the administration, owing to its proposeal to raise the tax rate, a step which will be imperative- ; }y ecessary to provide funds for the ''great increases in the army ‘and navy *.budgets, to which the governmen pledged. ‘In.order to combat the increase. the tax rate, particularly that -of wealthy men and corporations, a tax- ation’ investigation ~club has' been formed by ‘members of ¢hambers of commerce, stock exchanges in- surance associations, which inténds to 'Jead ‘the 'fight against’ the'‘tax in-| crease, ‘and this will without doubt cause some difference in the line-up of 'the forces at the polls. Considsrsble fear is also belng felt. that the masses may attempt to make their influence felt, and: some papers * and popular leaders have gone o far as to predict ‘that Japan is likely to see demonstrations similar’to the rice rlots of the fall of 1918; in the near future. The ugly temper of the work- ing people is being shown by frequent: “go slow”” strikes, 'a form of expres-}:: sion which is rapidly becoming the _i popular-form of labor ‘demonstration % jn Japan. Thus the tramcar men, * ‘who only a:few weeks ago won out in a strike for higher wages, are again metting ready to enforce s demand: fop, | Temporary Prosperity C.iises Many to Jump(fnh Sea of Metflmony (By-International News Service) Boston) April; 23— Young people .|today are rushing into . marriage ‘| is too: big a risk” declares ‘McGlennon stated. l villain ‘to. keep up the ess of things. .
