:SATURDAY -EVENING, APRIL 10, 1920 GONVICK T0 HAVE WHITE - WAY HOSPITAL AND THEATRE 23." A. Norquist, Newly Elected in over the entrance of the building and the screen is being erected to- day. Chairs, electric fans, and oth- er fixtures have been ordered and when these arrive everything will be in readiness for the opening of the house which will take place some- time during the present month. The projector is a power-driven machine and will be operated by an electric motor as will the large play- er-piano recently installed by Mr. Berger at a cost of $1,500. It is the intention of Mr. Berger to give two shows a week increasing the performances as the business warrants it. There is positively no “let-up” in the efforts of the Gonvick Commun- ity club to do things for the town President, Suggests and vicinity. Not content with hav- ing’ put across several important . Improvements propositions within the last three]: weeks, ..e club came right back at a special meeting Wednesday even- ing and took preliminary steps’to- ward building a community hospital. It required but a few minutes for the orgdnization to reach its deci- sion to support the proposition after Dr. Stevens, 1local physician, and others had explained the need and value of a hospital in Gonvick. Some twenty odd enthusiastic members were present and pledged $2,200 +as the beginning of a fund with which to build the institution. A committee was appointed to can- vas the village in an effort to secure additional pledges for stock in a cor- poration to be organized :t a second meeting called for Friday afternoon, April 16th. At that time residents in the ‘surrounding country -and townspeople will join together and complete plans outlined at the nrst meeting. The loan is to build a cottage hos- pital, modern in every respect, such as is recommended for places like Gonvick and which are being built in many communities throughout the United States. The building will cost in the neighborhood of $10,000, it is estimated. Other matters up for consideration by the club at this meeting, was the highway running around the west shore of Pine Lake, and leading into town from the south. It is in a de- ‘plorable condition - and prevents many settlers from coming here with their products and for their supplies during the wet period of the year. This was réferred to the good-roads committee who will take the matter ‘ _— NEW SOUTH ROAD FOR CITY ALSO MENTIONED «Community Club Active in Development Work for City When friends of Martin Kjolhaug .and F. A. Norquist attempted to ring -gxcitement into the village elec- stion by placing these two on the ticket for president of the village .council, the outcome proved quite ~gontrary to the well laid plans of the plotters. Neither candidate did any work in ‘behalf of his own campaign and the Jmatter of selecting a president was left entirely to the voters. :The con- “test was a ‘friendly affair, in fact:so {riendsly tha ‘the two candidates -came together and agreed that who- : -ever won should celebrate the vic- “tory with a “feed” for the loser. . -Mr. Norquist was returned a win- -ner by a scant) margin of eight votes. | ‘He made good on the agreement Monday evening when he gave a ban- -guet for the new and retirinf mem- “bers of the council at the Gonvick “hotel. Following the banquet the new council organized at a short ses- sion at the First National Bank at ‘which they discussed plans for a ‘number of noteworthy improvements -during the coming year. Among the. Jmprovements planned was the open- ing of new streets, graveling thel main thoroughfare; installation of a| white way together with traffic ;guide post and protection ,for the village from fire and an organized fire department.
