SATURDAY EVENING, MARCH 20, 1820 THE BEMIDJI DAILY l"lONEEk 'PAGE SEVEN CONGRESS A ) SETRECORDOF INQUIRIESINTO SEVERAL LINES . Ranges From Profiteering in Men’s Collars Up to International Affairs SUGAR, U. S. TROOPS IN RUSSIA; OTHER THINGS Mexican Affairs, Soviet Agents, Transportation, Conduct ' of the War, Etc. — By -Raymond, Clapper (United Press correspondent)- Washington; March 20.—Breaking all previous récords, the present con- gress has ordered or proposed 200 in- vestigations covering almost as many subjects, according to '¢compilations. These range from profiteering in men's collars to the most weighty in- tetnational questione. How ‘much these investigations cost has not been reckoned but it is " estimated they will form 'a consider- ablé part of congressional expenses which run dbout §25,000 a day. “This Congress is also breaking the previous record for bills and resolu- tions {ntroduced, baving 18,777 to its it with only half of itstime gone. e previous congress, in its entire 3 years, piled up*23,811 in’ the . Bfusdand semate hoppers. ‘ e t‘zo‘ vlg-'fledi ut o ) resolutions offer n -both’ oiue%a; of, this bongress propos- ing-invéstigations of various kinds, 77 have 'been agreéd upon. They cov- er activities of Henry Ford, alleged diserimination - against individual backnien in the District of Columbia, and the “question of office rooms for Senators.” Scores of resolutions have (been introduced and many adopted for investigation .of almost every ex- ecutive department and prominent administration official. Scarcely any local disturbance of consequence in any quarter of the country escapes bhaving a resolution of investigation introduced. Forest fires in Minnesota, race riots in southern cities, the coal and steel strikes all prompted sesolu- , tions. Manv Subijects Covered. . The list of subjects covered by resolution offered in this congress in- - -cludes: substitutes for railroad cross- | .ties, coal prices, sotialistic activities i ‘in the Federal Trade Commission, su- i gar profiteering, propaganda to in- - fluence railroad legislation, troops in -Russia, peace treaty leak, Mexican af- fairs, activities of soviet agents in the United States, merchant marine ques- tions, garden, city and suburb im- provemient in Eurdpe, transportation problems in the Southwest, supply of cars for agricultural products, suspen sion of a Washington school teacher, high cost of living, methods by which army officers secured ‘“home duty” as- signments during the war, income tax dodging, publicity bureaus of govern- ment departments, influenza, malaria, and conditions in the Virgin Islands. ¢ Congress has conducted hearings on practically every question of na- tional interect including the conduct of the war, shipping, railroads reorg- anization, the meat packing industry, food prices, and radical propaganda. “Who Wrote I1t?" When Demetra Vaka, author of “Haremlik” and “In the Shadow of Jslam,” first came to America she was governess for a year to the two little - grandsons of J. Fenimore Cooper. The children had been brought up with the utmost reverence for their famous grandfather, and bad uncon- selously imbibed the belief that all the world's - best literatare was the off- ‘spring of his pen. Something wag said in the elder boy’s hearing one day about one of the % pooks of the Bible, with some refer- ence to its authorship, and the boy looked up at his governess with a ‘startled face. “Who wrote the Bible?” he demand- ed, as one whose first faith has been shaken. Demetra Vaka explained as best as she could about the various books, and the boy sighed, still a bit incredulous, “] aways thought,” he said slowly, “that grandfather wrote it.” 5 Needless Labor. % “John,” said the nervous woman, “1 thini ihere is a burgiar in the house?” “Nonsense! Wky should a prede- tory person take the trounle to break into a dwelling when be can walk around a few blocks and gather up gallons of priceless milk?”- His Regular Fee.
