|TWO BREEDS IN SAME FLOCK Kvfl.lnu Is .Prevented by Keeping Maiile of One Breed One Year and Another the N*xt. (Prepared by the United States Depart- ment of Agriculture.) While keeping two distinct breeds of poultry in one yard without mix- ing the breeds seems difficult, it can be accomplished easily and with satis- ifactory results, as shown by the ac- count of an experience just received /from a New England poultry raiser. !One of the kinds kept is a so-called |egg breed, the other being a general- ipurpose variety of poultry. The {imethod of preventing crossing is as follows: One year, roosters of the egg-laying 'breed are retained and used for breed- #ing, no other males being kept. The First Prize White Rock Cockerel. fol. ~ing year roosters of only the i general-purpose stock are kept. The | difference in the color of eggs of the two breeds selected is so great that ‘hatchlng eggs have always been select- 'Lod with a certainty as to the breed Jaying t! .. The plan necessitates in- itroducing new males, but the advan- tages of keeping the blood lines of two breeds separate outweigh the slight cost of purchasing the males.. The de- |partment of agriculture points out that when this method is followed on two meighboring farms an exchange of rocsters might readily be arranged. JREMODELING POULTRY HOUSE ! e .Many. Stuffy Old Structures Can Be] Rebulit With Little Trouble— Cost Is Smail. | Many farms have old style, closed- ‘wp poultry houses with poor light and ventilation; also old sheds and other buildings of little use for other pur- poses that can be remodeled or built over with little difficulty into satis- factory poultry houses, according to the United States department of ag- i riculture. A bullding of that kind usually can i be made over for less tban one-half the cost of constructing 2 new one, {and if -the work is well dong should give just as good results. Further- more, the work performed in remodel ing the building serves. as a good poultry club demonstration in poultry house construction. |KEEP ALL PROFITABLE HENS Close Attention and Study Must Be Given to Each Individual Fowl —Some Are Layers. Keep all hens as long as they are profitable. This calls for close atten- tion and the study of each individual hen, but it is work that pays. The man who turns off every hen that reaches the age of two years is pretty sure to sacrifice some of his best ilayers. I3 and mash hoppers are essentiai to the | health of good layers. A O ] All air that is admitted for ventila- | tion should be so handled that it ‘will }not blow on the fowls, especially' when ‘ they are on the roost at night. * & s One of the best ways to furnish 1 green food is to hang a cabbage head {just high enough so that the fowls ‘wwlll have to jump for it. . & » A warm, comfortable henhouse will |@0 much to secure a good egg yield, ifor fowls that are not comfortable i cannot lay well. * s s There is not much danger that ihealthy, vigorous fowls will become too fat, if compe]led to exercise by iscratching for the grain part of their iration. . s It is necessary to provide the hens with some reason for exercising in winter because they have no incen- itlve to exercise naturally, as they do {tn summer hnnflng for bugs md 1'wml, ete. rtive Paace 'MAY ESTABLISH WHALE HERD Los Angeles Man;(:onfldent There Are Great Possibilities in Such an Undertaking. A whale dairy is the latest possie bility in Los Angales, Cal,, if the ine cipient demand for whale’s milk is continued. Although whale meat has been served in leading hotels on the Pacific coast for more than a year, the milk of ‘the cumbersome mammal has not been in special de- mand. According to Capt. John B. Loop, a whaler at Long Beach, who has been supplying the most delicate cuts of the mammal fish to hotels and res- taurants patronized by connoisseurs, the milk of the whale is richer and more palatable than cow’s milk. A test made at a lodge function result- ed in a request for a permanent sup- ply of the new drink. Captain Loop has received an order from Omaha, Neb., for a quantity of whale’s milk. Captain Loop is leaving soon for his first whaling voyage of the sea- son. He has announced that if the demand for sca mammal milk ap- pears to be premanent, an effort will be made to bring the cow whales home hereafter, so they can be herded into a dairy. NO DANGER “We never know what accidents we ‘may meet with in life.” “Iknow one that will never hap- pen to my husband. He won’t fall off the water wagon again.” HANGMEN WANT ‘MORE MONEY. England’s public executioners, the hangmen, want their pay increased, and their claim has been presented direct to the house of commons by a member of that bedy. Augustine Hailwood inquired whether the. gov- ernment knew it was paying the exe- cutioners no more than in prewar days. A government representative replied that the matter would re- ceive consideration. The hangmen recently were deprived of the privi- lege of taking away the rope with which the criminal was hanged. This reduced one of the sources of their revenue, as the rope could be sold for a good price to curiosity collectors. VARIABLE IMPRESSIONS. “A million dollars seems a com- pamtlvely small sum of money now- adays.” “It’s 'much like any other sum of money,” rejoined Mr. Dustin Stax. “Tt seems small when it’s to be sent but large when it’s to be collected.” HIS SHARE IN WAR. “If they try the kaiser, I wonder if one of the charges will be that he | was a slacker and fought shy of the battlefields 7’ “Hardly. He could prove he went out and picked violets on them.” VERY MUCH S0. “I. see where some officer .8 “| charged with makmg a soldier eat his cigarette.” “Then ] don’t wonder: the men complained of being on a light diet.” CATTY RETORT. Belle—Did you find mistletoe so [ nigh that you could net afford to get any? Nell—Oh, no, but I didn’t need it. ITS LOCALITY. “Were you shell-shocked ?” “Once.” “In’France ?” . “No, at the county fair when I thought I could beat the game.” NOT THAT KIND. “These deported anarchists will meet with retribution for their con- duct here.” “T hope it won’t be in the nature of a comeback.” “0UCH!
