FRIDAY EVENING, JANUARY 2, 1920 ¥ | | (Prepared by the United States Depart- .. ~ment of Agriculture.) If you have ever led a norse down a long and tortuous lane to water and en-had the animal repeatedly refuse drink, you are in a position to ap- . preciate the predicament of the poul- 'try ralser who equips his poultry ‘“phouse with trap nests and then finds that _some of the pullets will not use e ingenious devices. That latent tinct of the female fowl to deposit _‘her eggs In secluded, remote spots, " prefergbly in a nest which she per- 4 — ally constructs, may cause trouble to the chicken raiser who attempts fo accustom the pullets to the arti- ficial trap nest. Beginning of Trouble. Usually as soon ae the pullets are removed to winter quarters where trap nests are used the trouble be- fins, as some of the young females -may lay their eggs on the floor in the straw and litter, In the corners of / | the bullding, and often upon and un- ‘fler the dropping boards. In remedy- Ing such misdemeanor on the part of the pullets, it ie first essential to see that enough trap nests are provided. Usually the equipment should include pne trap nest for each four pullets or ~hens in’ the flock. Having remedied any deficiency in the way of nest . pquipment, . the poultryman should fext resort to handling as a means pf ‘curing the fowls of their undesir- < . habit of laying their eggs any- i - RAISING IS REVIVED ‘towa Fafmers Experience Diffi- “ culty in Getting Carpenters. OLD-FASHIONED BARN feature of the movement which is | i(Prepared by the United States Depart- OVERCOME NATURE ot - OF HEN TO DEPOSIT EGG IN TRAP NEST where and everywhere about the house. The owner or attendant should enter the house frequently through- out the day, aund as often as he finds one of the pullets nesting in a seclud- ed spot he should pick the bird up and place her in a trap nest. After he does this several times the pullet becomes accustomed to the artificial nests and seeks them intuitively when she is ready to lay eggs. Make the Nests Cozy. Of course, it is essential to make the nests as attractive and cozy as possible, and this is accomplished by providing them with plenty of clean litter, as oftei: as a new supply of straw is needed. Furthermore, in par- ticularly objectionable cases it pays to clean all the litter from the.floor of the house, in order to .Lreak the hens of laying promiscuously wher- ever they desire. By removing the straw and bedding, the floor of the house is not so attractive as a nest- ing spot for the hens and pullets, and hence they are forced to seek the trap nests. N The purpose of trap nesting the flock is to ascertain which hens lay, either for determining what record they make or for identifying their eggs during the hatching season, so that pedigree records are posstble. Trap nesting requires a considerable amount of attention, but is a valuable ald in developing a flock of poultry by breeding for egg production. savp steps, but it is easier to keep ‘the birds healthy and to reproduce the Istock under the colony system, where the birds are allowed free range. tflreedlng stock and especially growing ‘chickens should have an abundance ‘of range, while hens used solely for lthe production of market eggs may be ikept on a very small aree. SANITARY FLOORS ARE BEST ‘ccmont Is Adapted to Long Perma- | [ry houses, or the intensive system, nent Bulldings Where an Arti- 1 ficial Floor Is Needed. (Prepared by the United States Depart- ‘ ment of Agriculture.) The best kind of a floor depends pon the soil and the use of the poul- house. On light, sandy, well- rained solls a dirt floor is satisfac- tory, especially for small or colony ‘hen houses. Such floors should be rom 2 to 6 Inches higher than the uteide ground surface, and it is ad- isable to renew them each year by emoving the contaminated surface iown to clean sofl, and to refill with fresh sand or fine gravel and earth. board floor is generally used where {the level of the floor In the house is m 1 to 8 feet above the ground sur- ce and in portable houses on land lwhich 18 not well drained. Board floors harbor rats and rot quickly, and should be raised some distance foff the ground, so that cats or dogs ican get under them, which also allows a free circulation of air to prevent 'the wood from rotting. Cement floors {are adapted to long permanent build- ‘ings, brooder houses, incubator cel- lars, and to all permanent houses where an artificfal floor is required land can be buiit on the ground level. [These floors are easy to clean, very lsanitary, rat proof, and comparatively inexpensive, if one has a cheap supply of gravel or sharp sand.
