YOUNG FOWLS GROW RAPIDLY There ls Always Good Demand for Birds at Profitable Prices—Feath- ers Are Abundant and of Val uable Texture. Anyone who cares to investigate the -question of value in the different breeds of ducks for practical purposes —that is, ducks that pessess real mar- ket value—should read the ‘history of some of the immense duck farms about Long Island, in New York state, which are 6o frequently !llustrated and written up in the leading poultry Journals. It would seem from the pictures shown, and the articies given, that there is no thought given to :any oth- er breed of ducks for their purposes By these utllity breeders than the Pe- kin ducks. This varlety seems to fill the 'bill with them all the way through, which, no doubt, is really the case, for the Pekin stands at the head -of all ducke when it comes to real market value. We have bred them and know something about them, says a writer in an exchange. The young stock grow fast and soon reach a market- able gize, and the percentage of loss in raising them is very small Pekin Is Good Layer. ‘We 4o not belleve in the duck that lays like a Leghorn hen We have read of her, but we never swned such a duck, regardless of breed. Fer a certainty the Pekin duck does mot lay as many eggs in a year as a Leghorn hen, but that does not detract frem ‘her value, for she does lay enough Pekin Ducks About Seven Weeks Ol in Fattening Pan, <ggs in the first four or five month: of the yeur to enahle her keeper ¢ raise and market several dollars’ waerth of soung ducks from her eggs. These young ducks have size an weight, and may be made fat and julcy before marketing, which is al- ways done by the big duck raisers in the East, and this is why they raise ducks of the Pekin variety for the market. This ean be done as well, |” and there is always a ready and profit- able market for such ducks. Three Features of Value, There are really three features of value in the Pekin duck. One is her egges to be converted into young ducke as suggested. The other is her feath- |/ ers, which are abundant and of a soft texture and valuable in the market, | i and she may be picked at least twice |’ a year. The third point of value is when the duck herself is fattened and marketed. Pekin ducks are great foragers, and with favorable surroundings., such as a pond or other water source, and graee to range over, they will pick up in this way more than half of their food. It is true they may be raised under less favorable conditions, but at less profit and with more care and work.
