Washington, Dec. 17.~Rhode Is- Jand’s suit against the constitutional prohibition amendment and the Vol- stad law enforcing it was filed wiwn the supreme court today. Song-Loving Mocking Bird. Many bird lovers who are now per- manent residents of Florida, but who spent their early youth in the North, claim that the varied song of the mocking bird fully compensates them for the lack of the robin, the song sparrow, the oriole and other song- sters that they were accustomed to hear and see among the orchards and hills of their Northern homes. The mocking bird in the South really fills the place in one’s affections that the robin holds in the north. GAY TOWN OF VERNON DYING To Be Merged With City of Los An. geles as Result of Pro- hibition Law. Los Angeles, Cal.—The city of Ver- non, a little independent town entirely surrounded by the southeast section of Los Angeles, i® about to give up its municipal ghost, and be merged into the corporation of Los Angeles. The decislon of Vernon to become a mem- ory followed the enactment of federal prohibition. Until that arrived, Ver- non was a ‘“wet spot,” entirely sur- rounded by arid Los Angeles. It is a manufacturing town, but its claim to fame has rested on its ente?- tainment facilities, Before the country went dry, Vernon had a group of res- taurants and cafes that were famous all over the country. The motion pic- ture people, the artists and Bohemians, and the writers of the West, all turned there for gayety. Witk the passing of liquor, city rev- enues of Vernon, derived from license fees and from fines against the hilar- fous patrons, have dwindled to noth- ing; it can’t pay salaries, hence it can- not retain officials. CUTS HIS THROAT WITH SHOE Edge of Sole Is the Weapon Used by Brooklyn Blind Man to Kill Self. Brooklyn, N. Y.—Using the sharp i edge sole of a new palir of shoes, which he had never worn, to cut his throat, Patrick Fay, forty-five, an inmate of the Home for the Blind, 516 Gates avenue, ended his life. Fay had been an inmate for a year and had been a favorite in the home. He was a skil- ful pianist, and an hour before he ended his life was playing the piano in the reception room at the home. Apother. inmate heard groans com- iog from Fay's room and notified the superintendent. Fay was found dead in hjs bed with the new pair of shoes, soaked with blood, beside him on the floor. y ’ Bemidji Market Quota Chicago, Dec. 17.—Potato receipts today were 30 cars, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin bulk with a dull market. o} Qualities of Precious Stones. 3 Opals are in certain respects alto- gether. peculiar among gewn stones, Whereas other gems, such as the ruby/ the emerald, and the sapphire, owe their colors to mineral elements by which the crystals are stained, the brilliant tints of the opal are due to its structure, ever so many minute cracks reflecting lights at different angles from their edges. An amethyst is quartz crystal of anather variety, containing from 5 to 13 per cent of water, His Prescription, His father has a pronounced partial- ity for Bill, and the.latter is diplonat enough to work this feeling of his fath- er's whenever an opportunity offers. Quite recently young William injured his hand severely, and when his father returned home he inquired: “Well, Bill, how’s the hand?” Seecing his father was in a mellow mdod, William answered: *I think some ice cream would help it.” ‘THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER Saw Well' at ¢ bnca. An enormous deposit of asphalt in Leyete province, in the Philippines, lies so near the shore line at Tacloban that ships can anchor and take on cargoes from lighters loaded at the mines with practically no overland transportation. : Common Sense.
