COMPLETEFOR POTATO SHOW OFTHENMDA Will Be Held in Conjunction W ith Annual Convention of Association FARM MACHINERY TO BE ON DISPLAY Boys and Girls Will Enter Contests; Vital Topics for Settlers’ Aid By Fred T. Lincoln. (Secretary, Northern Minnesota Development Association.) Brainerd, Nov. 5.—Everything is in readiness for the annual conven- . tion and potato show of the North- ern Minnesota Development associa- tion to be held in Duluth, November 12, 13 and 14 in the new armory Dduilding and advices from that city indicate that this will be without question, the largest potato exhibit ever held under the auspices of this organization. To Aid Settlers. ‘The program is replete with prac- tical discussions on topics vital to i the development of northern Minne- y sota and covers a wide latitude. The N. M. D. A. officials take the position i that its work should not only include the securing of settlers for northern Minnesota, but promoting their suc- oess along agricultural lines as well, after they are here, and; with this in mind, the committee has arranged for the discussion of subjects pertin- ent to the interest of every settler and every one in this section should make it a point to attend. Exhibit of Machinery. o A splendid exhibit of farm imple- ¢ ments and especially those used in |- the planting, cultivation, digging and marketing of potatoes has been arranged for and space taken in the large armory by twelve prominent manufacturers and distributors of po- tato machinery, plows, planters and diggers, as well as companies handl- ing explosives for land clearing. This will be an important and interesting feature of the convention. The sheep industry in northern Minnesota has not been forgotten and an exhibit of wool will be put on by the Patrick company of Duluth. Aristocratic Tubers. ‘There will be fifteen tabies of po- tato exhibits, each 36 feet long, and the very best samples of tubers will be shown. The Boys’ and Girls’ po- tato contest, always a big feature of the N. M. D. A. convention, will be unusually interesting this year and a-large number of entries have been made. This exhibit will be larger than ever this year. The University of Minnesota will put on a plant dis- ease exhibit and show how to pre- vent potato diseases. A potato menu, cafeterial will be conducted in the armory, with a splendid program and a list of prom- inent speakers arranged for, and this big potato and machinery exhibit as drawing features fcr the coming con- vention, it seems certain to be the most important gathering in develop- ment work in northern Minnesota this winter, and advices from Duluth indicate that hotel accommodations are already being secured with the prospect of a record-breaking attend- ance. Abyssinian Likes American Styles. “T would like to see Abyssinian wom- en dress like American women,” Is a remark credited to Prince Nadoa, the head of the Abyssinian mission in this country. This may be merely a bit of oriental fluttery or it may be an tndieation of the prince’s bravery. It should he remembered, first, that the #overeign of Abyssinia is a woman, and a- descendant of the queen whose ele- gance and beauty of costume dazzled King Solomon's court, and in the next place that in’ :\h,vs.'w]n!n style does not change more than once every thou- sand years, and that for that length of time the life of a man {s free from all pecuniary worrfes Incident to shanging fashions and new dresses. Without any intention of forecasting tfouble for the prince, it ight he suggested that If this story -should precede him he wiil have some ex- planations to make either to the queen or to the husbands and fathers of Abyssinia. Meteonies of indicated great age, are not found in museum collections, and it is suggested that such specimens may disintegrate and disappear from the rocks within a relatively short time after falling. The Britlsh Museum, however, has acquired a slice weighing somewhat less than a pound from a meteoric fron that is believed to represent an ancient fall, says the Newark News. The slice is from one of two simi- lar masses ‘nat were found in Jan- uary, 1905, within a few miles of Daw- son, Klondike, and that, from their positira in the oldest gravels of the district, are thought to have rested theve since the Pliocene age.
