Aleppo, Syria (By Mail)—Bring- ‘ing lumber across the Arabjan desert ‘by camel caravan is ome of the achievements for which Americans will be longest remembered in Alep- ‘po. The lumber was used in the re- -gonstruction of Armenian refugees’ lo%es. § hen the American Red Cross ar- tived here it found many refugees living in the open, their houses hay- :ing fallen apart through the reinoval .of timbers by Turk soldiery for fire- ‘wood. The nearest timber source -was the Taurus mountains along the ‘Euphrates river. An expedition un- .der Capt. Bdward Bickel of Seattle, “Washinigtoh, was sent to investigate. ‘It arrangsd for the cutting of timber .and its transportation down the river .on rafts to Bl Doit, in the desert. Convoys of camels were thén en- .gaged and the lumber carried for :miles across the desert to Aintab, _Aleppo and Marash. Troubles arose -with the Bodouin tribes of the desert, :attacks being made upon the convoys .and: the lumber occasionally destroy- -ed. Captain Bickel then arranged for a guard of thirty armed men to .accompany each caravan. There- -after the supplies arrived regularly. One hundred native carpenters -were rounded up by Capt. Bickel and Furs made to order, repaired and remodeled at BROCKMAN FUR FACTORY At Treppman’s Department Store H. C. Of the two old Hawaiian idols lately found concealed in the earth at Hook- :aupu, Paukukalo, one, a female idol, is ‘in a fairly good state of preservation. "The idol is supposed to be that of Ki- thawahine, the Undine of Maui myths. Her haunts are the springs at Pauku- kalo, the Kauaha pond, and the match- Jess pools in the wooded glens :around Pilholo, Makawao. The legends about her compare with ‘those of the German fairy folklore, :and around the charms of her person as she sits combing her wealth of golden tresses at the edge of some ‘bathing pool is woven many a half- forgotten Mauri folk tale. In some of the latest ones she is weputed to have lured two haoles at sdifferent times on a merry chase only 0 see her disappear in one or another of the deep, clear-water pools among the wooded glens of Pilholo. One, a <octor, ended his aimless wanderings 10 her glenwood haunts by beécoming & paralytic, the other, a woodciutter, Mever ceased to describe the charms of ‘this “wonderful woman with the gol- -den hair,” always able to elude hi§ em- ‘brace, but ever beckoning him on to Jer lair among the vines and trees -and pools and crags of the glens about Pilholo.—Wailuku (H. 1) Times.
