W. B. ERWIN —Photo by Hak Mrs. W B. Erwin, Bemidji, is an Aare t in The Pioneer’s campaign. Erwin has made splendid progress and her many friends are interested in helping her win one of the auto- mobiles to be presented Saturday, " November 1. The one big problem contranting the people of Bemidji and the outside territory is, *“Who will prove the au- tomobile winners in” The ‘Pioneer's great circulation campaign?” Scores of predictions have been offered; even mind readers have been consult- ed by some in an endeavor to obtain some inkling of what the result will be. Yet all these quests avail them naught, for the final outcome is as much as ever in doubt. If frenzied efforts to eliminate as much of this doubt as possibie, can- didates all over The Pioneer territory are scouring the communities cease- lessly. From the waking hours of the morn until the day is done these ambitious candidates are fighting the battle courageously, mever pausing, but keeping on and on, that the tide of favor will sweep towards them. Such scenes are seldom witnessed. Imagine dozens of candidates, each thrilled with the spirit of conquest, striving mightily for supremacy in this race. Obstacles that might de- ter strong-minded men, they push aside as nothing. Their eyes are set on the final goal, and ever onward they proceed nip and tuck. One candidate wrote )esterday: “l am working at the fastest clip of which I am capable, but the time seems to fly even faster.”” And that about covers every candidate in the field. All of them have an equal Qp- portunity for victory, and none can say that they have earned a victory until the result is announced. The aspirants for automobiles are with cne accord persecuting their chances vigorously, and many, who appar- their present standings as published, are going to spring such big surprises that too-contident ones will go down to defeat. Overconfidence is the big- gest handicap under which a candi- date could labor. This unwelcome attribute causes more regret and dis- appointment than anything else in a campaign of this sort. The only way to be sure of winning is to spend every po-sible minute searching for subseriptions, which, as far ag can be judged and if the reports are to be believed, is exactly what every candidate is doing with a vim. Per- serverance is the only winning qual- ity, and coupled with energy of the right kind, will surely lund the candi- date at the top. The sum of $100 in gold will be di- vided into six prizes as follows: To the candidate residing im Dis- trict No. 1, who receivés the largest number of votes issued on collections between the dates of Tuesday, Octob-|- ‘Lake er 14 and 9 p. m.
