[ s Cane fruits, including raspberries, ‘blackberries and dewberries, growing xnder normal conditions, produce istrong, vigorous shoots from the .crowns early in the spring, says_V. 5. +Gardner of the University of Missom{ «college of agriculture. These become sthe fruiting canes the following year. “When they get to be about.two esd «one-half to three feet high they should ;have their terminals-pinched back an :inch or two to stimulate the formation of ‘lateral or branch shoots. This ‘makes a more compact bush that is ,less subject to winter injury,” and 'that, under ordinary circumstances, is :more productive. The cane fruit plan- tation should be gone over several :times, pinching back each time the shoots that have reached a height of two and one-half or three feet since they were gone over before, The lat- +erals should then be allowed to grow St. Paul, Oct. 17.—The number of posts of the American Legion in Min- nesota is approaching the 300-mark, The Republic of Ecuador celebrates “independence days,” according to the Pan-American Union. Such late ‘heading would be liable to force the .production of laterals that would not’ mature well before winter, and that consequently would be more subject . to winter injury. As soon as the fruiting season is over the old canes that have borne fruit should be pruned out, carried off the patch or fleld and burned. Many | growers neglect to remove these old . canes until the following spring; but it is important that they be removed promptly. If left during the summer and fall months, they harbor insects and diseases that spread to the new . growth, decrease the next year’s crop .and shorten the life of the plantation. . As a matter of fact, the best and most effective way to deal with the insect and disease problem in the cane fruit plantation is to cut out and burn the -0lG canes immediately after each fruit- ing season. (Prepared by the United States Depart- ment of Agriculture.) A net return of $2 a hen over a four- months’ period is the remarkable rec- ord of a North Carolina poultry club member who, about the middle of Jan- uary, mated 15 White Leghorn hens with a standard-bred male of the same variety. During the ensuing four months these 15 hens lald 1,108 eggs. Of this number 50 were placed in the incubator, from which 41 chicks were hatched and all but five were raised. ' The owner marketed six cockerels for $3.60. He now has on hand 30 pullets, He so0ld 304 eggs for hatching purposes for $30.50, as well as 543% dozen mar Club Boy Feeding His #lock. ket eggs for $20.07, making a total in- come from his small flock of $54.80. The cost of feeding the flock during this time was $21.40, which leaves a net return of $33.40. This record is by no means excep- tional, as, with the coming of the poul- try club and with the development of enthusiasm among its members, egg producing as well as flock income re- turns, has greatly inereased in every section. Properly developed and fostered, poultry is one of the most profitable side-lines in which most farmers can become interested, and, at present, there Is hardly any activity of modern farming which will pay better than the maintenance and production of good poultry. ¢ — B LTI P T T S O The Deposits of The Northern National Bank show a gain of $125,000 from January 1st, 1919, to October 1st, 1919; equalling 29.3 per cent in nine 'l||m||mlllluuluuumllm||'|i||'u||'1illlil‘nnm‘ii| months.
