WEDNESDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 15, 1919 NELSON RENTS HIS NEW FARM FOR NEXT YEAR IN CLEARBROOK Two Young Men Will Study for Ministry; Leave for St. Peter College TILE DEALER DISPOSES OF LARGE QUANTITY Delegates to Meeting of Jeffer- son Highway Return, Boost- ing for Good Roads ‘ (Special to Pioneer.) Clearbrook, Oct. 15.—Bad weath- er threatened, but the good prevailed. . Attorney-Emil T. Evenson depart- ed Friday evening, on a professional trip into South Dakota. . We hope that the final proof read- e; will read “WEME,” for Weme, after this and not ‘“Werne” as form- erly. Wome is a busy trade center located 8% miles southwest of Clear- brook in Eddy township, at which point is located the wWell known Weme Co-operative creamery, con- ducted by the farmers in that local- ity and the fine and up-to-date gen- eral merchandise store managed by Carl Gunwalson. Wern, or Vern, is ‘#-postoffice located in the southeast #éttion of our county, near the Itasca State.park and has no connection in oeommon in any shape or manner with our ‘“Weme"” over here. Walter Nelson is back from Canby, this state. Welcome back Walter! Martin Kjoulhang, the well known and popular county surveyor of Clearwater county, whose home is at GQonvick, visited with friends here Saturday. . Carl Jacobson has rented the Theo- dore Golberg farm, now owned by C: G. Nelson of this place, for the coming year. Fred Peterson has rented Mrs. Em- ma Lewis’s farm for next year. - sear Lewis has become’ the owner | “of a“Ford. run-about. Rev. E. Bjorquist of Holst is now the pusher of a brand new Ford run- about. Carl Abrahamson and Clarence Sjolander departe@ Friday evening, for St. Peter, this state, where they will enter college. We understand that Clarence will take up studies to become a minister. Hiram Kabhler, the tile dealer, has disposed of a large quantity of tile this fall, which speaks well for the progressiveness of our farmers. L. Jensen and Olaus Henderson returned Friday afternoon from the State Jefferson Highway meeting at Little Falls, this state, where they attended as delegates from our county. They report a splendid meeting, and an ideal reception by this live little city. J. H. Beek was re-elected to the presidency of the state organization, which was but right and proper. Mr. Beek has proved himself the right man in the right place, and his displacement at this time would have been a distinct loss. A Babcock club was formed, with four directors as follows: Thomas Cashman of Owatonna, J. K. Martin of Little Falls; Dan K. Shaw, of Thief River Falls, and J. H. Beek of St. Paul, while R. B. Billand was elected secretary. Albert Kaiser, one of the delegates from this coun- ty, also attended, while Commission- ers Evenvoll and Weite from Itasca took it in. We understand that about all of our boosters who attend- ed came home boosters for good roads in geveral, and especially strong for the Babcock Good Road amendment, which will come up for a vote at the next general election. Read the “Pioneer” boost Clear- brook and talk for Clearwater coun- ty. You do all this when you sub- scribe for the “Pioneer.” Humbugs In Animal Kingdom. In military stables horses are known | to have pretended to be lame in order to avoid going to a military exercise. A chimpanzee had been fed on cake when sick. After his recovery he often feigned coughing in order to procure | dainties. The cuckoo, as is well known, lays : its eggs in another bird’s nest, and, %o make the deception surer, it takes away one of the other bird’s eggs. Ani- mals are conscious of their deceit, as is shown by the fact that they try to act secretly and noiselessly; they show a sense of gullt if detected ; they take precautions in advance to avold discovery; in some cases they mani- fest regret and repentance, an ex- change says. Thus. bees which steal hesitate often before and after their exploits. as if they feared punishment. A naturalist describes’ how his monkey committed theft. While he pretended to sleep the animal regard- ed him with hesitation, and stopped every time his master moved or seemed on the point of awakening. “ZBOUND THE WODID ' WITH THE AMERI CROSS. In Roumania. + Soon after the entrance of the United States in the war the successes of the Central Powers in Roumania had reduced that country to a most tragic condition and in the summer of 1917, the American Red Cross des- patched its first Roumanian relief contingent. Two hospitals were at once taken over and operated by the Red Cross, a canteen for the starving ' refugees established and food and clothing distributed over a large area. Transportation was one of the toughest problems with which the Red Cross workers in Roumania had to deal, Here is seen an oxcart used by the Red Cross to carry its relief supplies up into the mountains.
