b \ TUESDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 14, 1919 FIXED TO LAUGH AT OLD H. C. L. Dining Car Chef Would Surely Have Had One Good Meal but for the Police. | Chicago.—George Abraham Lincoln ’.Phompgo_n, being. a dining car chef and rather a deep student of philoso- phy, saw no good reason why he qhould go hungry—or, in fact, why he should spend good money on the up- keep of his gastronomical machinery when food was to easy for him to obtain. He also had in mind the saying, “Get while the getting is good, and get all you can when you can.” ‘Which explains his presence in the Grand Crossing police station. Policeman James Gallagher, having a discerning and appraising eye for { 8topped Short When He Gazed Upon George. P ;the grace and the symmetry. of the 'human contour, stopped short when .he gazed upon George. There was too ,much of a swagger to his walk. He was too tall to be humpbacked, too well gaited to have such a bulging front. Why, there were knobs all over ‘him. He looked like & human black- ithorn stick that was swollen in the |middle. Gallagher took him in to show him ito his pals—and then there came & revelation. _ Besides a heavy conscience, George .Abraham Lincoln Thompson was car- rying: | 15 pounds choice rib roast. | 1 dressed chicken. 4 cans of mushrooms. -1 can of baked pork and beans. | 8 1-pound tins of coffee. i 8 pounds of bacon. 4 pounds of butter. George confessed. He had taken ithe food from the dining car, and was (going home for a light breakfast. Poor George! Bread and coffee for his. The Lerot and the Snake. BEvery one has heard of the remark- able combats of the Indian mongoose with venomous snakes, in which little rikkitikki-tavvi comes off victor. The fact that the mongoose invariably sur vives has led to the suggestion that it is immune to snake polson. Other animals said to be immune are the pig and the hedgehog. The experiments of a British naturalist show that an anim- al of the dormouse family must be added to the list of the immune. This animal 1s known as the lerot and is sald to fight flercely with vipers. Large doses of viper's poison were in- fected Into one lerot, from which in- Jection no i1l effects followed. On one occasion a lerot was badly bitten In the eye by a viper and no signs of pol- soning followed. Amen, ' He was awfully wild. In fact, he was wildly wild. “] tell you once and for all” he roared at his erring offspring, “if you marry Grace I'll cut off without a penny. and you won't have so much as & plece of beef to boil in the pot.” “Well,” sald the young man as he went in search of the parson, “Grace before meat.”—London Idesas. 4 BANKS GET ASST.
