These prizes include a thousand dollar Russell grader, a bronze mem- orial tablet, costing a like sum, and 1,000 100-foot steel flag poles. This announcement is made offi- oially by M. E. Harrison, director of the Ninth Federal reserve district, who also said that it is expected that a $5,000 memorial granite shaft would be added as a grand prize. The prize competition is expected to materially add to the October & sale of treasury certificates. The signature to the above mes- sage was signed “War Savings Or- #anization,” and received bv the Ninth Federal district headquarters {rom Washington. ’ STATE ROADS BODY GETS BIG SHAKE-UP AND OFFICERS RETIRE Directors Object to Methods in Conducting Affairs of Association — 8t. Paul, Oct. 4.—Reorganization of the Minnesota Highway lmprove- ment association, formed last spring to boost the Babcock good roads amendment to the state constitution to be voted upon next fall, has been sffected, which, it is said, will mean the retirement of Willlam E. Verity, vice president, and Harry G. Davis, secretary. The -association has been incorpo- rated and all the old officers, includ- ing, besides those mentioned, Senator Patrick H. McGarry, president, and ‘Kelsey Chase, treasurer, were retired automatically. New officers will be chosen by the board of directors next Tuesday. Senator McGarry and Mr. Chase are said to be slated for re- election. The incorporators and directors of the new association are the directors of the old assocation, Senator Wil- 1tam F. Brooks of Minneapolis, John H. Hohmann of Mankato, David Mc- Kensie of Lake City, Senator Leonard H. "Nord' of Interfiational Falls, Danfel P. O’'Neil of Thief River Falls, Frank Webb of Duluth, and Ernest 1s Winship of Owatonna. ‘Dissatisfaction among the direc- tors with the methods of Mr. Davis and Mr. Verity in running the asso- ciation’s’ office in St. Paul and in egonducing the campaign for the Bab- cock amendment over the state is said to have been responsible for the reorganization. Mr. Verity recently had moved from Wadena to St. Paul, although he retained his newspaper property in Wadena. There had been consid- erable criticism of salaries paid both Mr. Davis and Mr. Verity and of printing contracts given Mr. Verity's aewspaper in Wadena. English Wornen Buying Farms. Women in England are buying thelr own farms or thelr own truck and gar- @en spuces In rather conspicuous num- bers. And this is all an outcome of the tremendous work done by women on the land during the war. The gen- eral feeling is that there will not he -much room for the common female farm lahorer as time advances, but for the woman who has a little money and who looks upon, farming as her pro- fession and her life work there Is ex- callent opportunity in this direction. o the first place, on account of the campact locatlon of the garden spaces and the cities in England transporta- tion: of foodstuffs is easy. Then gar- den truck and flowers do grow abun- dantly and profusely there, and always B#nd ready markets.
