| HAS WON PLACE OF HONOR | Salvation Army’s Work for Fifty-Four Years Recognized as Worthy of B the Highest Praise. . Except for the war the Salvation " Army would have celebrated its fiftleth birthday four years ago, but there s “could harflly have been a better re- minder of what the army had done and become in a half century than the recent award of the Victoria Cross to three Salvation Army soldiers for their service in France. Fifty-four years ago things were very different; the first appearances of the salvationists aroused opposition, rowdies tried to break up the meetings, and on at least one occaslon members of the future army were arrested in England as “disturbers of .the peace.” Originally srmply an attempt to make converts by outdbor preaching, the movement which William Booth started in July. 1865, was put on a military basis and became the Salvation Army in 1878, since which time it has grown from 75 corps in England to about 9,000 corps and outposts in more than 60 countries. The army was officially recognized by King Edward VII when he received the founder at Bucking- ham palace in 1904; a different yet re- markable “official recognition” oc- curred quite recently when a tableau ,,ionorlng the Salvation Army was made “the climax of the current “Zlegfeld Follles” on Broadway. YQUNGEST OF OUR SOLDIERS ! ft 141} R ; Mirhel Bourdain, fourteen years oid, youngest soldier in the United States army He lived at Maine-et-Loire on a farm with his parents. He kept five, grve his parents the rest and they opened a store in Bordeaux. He was attached to the Fifty-fourth coast artillery, where he made many friends, one of whom, E. H.
