The hotel inspection department of the state of Minnesota is finding itself handicapped by a proper apprecaition of what is necessary to know on the part of hotel owners and pro- prietors of hotels, restaurants, cafes, etc., and to that end we are going to devote editorial space to W. A. Wittbecker, state hotel inspector, wihose headquarters is in the state capitol. The law affecting the hotels of the state are specific, and violators of its provisions are subject to a heavy penalty. The outstanding features of the law are as follows: ‘All hotels and restaurants are required to have a license. All lodging or boarding houses having accommoda- tions for ten or more guests are required to have a license. All places where confectionery, ice cream, sand- wiches, or drinks of various kinds, are made, sold or served at retail must have a license, the fee for which is $3.50. , ] The law provides a penalty of from $25 to $100, or imprisonment in the county jail for not more than 90 days for failure to procure this license. At that, it might be a whole lot cheaper to obtain a license, those who have been neglectful, than to be compelled to pay one of those fines in case an inspector should happen to put in an appearance. o TODAY IS LABOR DAY—CONGRATULATIONS. Today members of organized labor cease from daily toil and observe the day in enjoyment with their families, indulges in sports, listens to oratory, enjoys a big feed with other mem- bers of the crafts and return tired out to their home, having thoroughly enjoyed the day. Mayhap a member might walk miles on a hot pavement in the spirit of loyalty to his calling, spurred on by the thought of the brothers also leg-weary, yet never flinching on the legally set day, devoted to labor’s in- clination. ) Bemidji didn’t celebrate today, but the ‘“‘baby” local, the Carpenters, took its families to Diamond Point and spent the day in a varied program. This is a newly organized local and decided to make the most of its first Labor Day. Organized labor is not different from any other organized business: or profession. Yet there is often heard the usual bugaboo about unusual demands in many directions, but in a southern Minnesota town just the other day the doctors met and decided upon raising their fees. Other organizations, be- sides labor, have also increased their incomes, all as the result of the post-war period, and have taken advantage of conditions as they exist for, in many instances, higher profits than are really necessary, which is stoutly resented not only by labor but by the unorganized public in general. We should like very much to see Bemidji’s organized locals stage a Labor Day observance. Many there are who are mem- bers of other locals, which are not represented in Bemidji, and these could poin with other card brethren and make a credit- able showing, co-operated with by a general citizenship. 0 '"WHEN WILSON SPEAKS TO STATE LEGISLATORS. According to a message {rom Governor Burnquist, sent from Washington, where he was one of a party of seven gov- ernors who called upon the president in the interests of legisla- tion having for its object the reduction of the high cost of living, the president will address the special session of the legislature of the state September 9. When Wilson faces that array of state representatives he will not gaze upon a gathering of aristocratic silkstockings, but the real type of what has helped develop the great state of Minnesota, radiant in her grandeur, progressive and patriotic to the core, the state that more than made good in every govern- ment war activity and paid the price on the battlefields of Europe, and whose sons did such heroic work, to enable the na't;ion’s chief executive to plead the cause of the league of nations. 0 A dispatch from Paris states that Pershing has refused to testify before a congress committee inquiring into American war expenditures in France. We’ve always maintained that Pershing was a soldier, every inch, and not a tale bearer. He is a fighter, not a squawker, and without ostentation carried out the terrible task assigned him, earning the unstinted ad- miration of the world, and future generations. " 0 An official of Japan has started a movement to prevent overcrowding of all third class street cars while those of the first class carry few passengers. Might get him to come over to America and set him to work in the larger cities. 0. The Bemidji public schools and the new normal will get down to business for the coming year tomorrow.
