He was later discharged,'and-went to visit relatives in a town in the northern states. While passing through the cen- tral part of the clty, he was attacked by a gang of toughs, ham- mered into unconciousness,‘and left on the sidewalk, an inert heap. He was afterwards picked up by policeman and taken to the station-house, where his injuries were treated. On returning to consciousness, he expressed a natural sur- prise at the conduct of his assailants. He was wearing his uni- form at the time—also his wounded stripes, and thought that looks! would be, at least, a guarantee of safety. - He had fought to After suffering pain, feelmg ner- protect his fellow-countrymen for three years, and had started vous, dizzy, weak and dragged a considerable time before they had thouglit of participating. So he had expected to be safe on reaching America. He would have been safe in Bemidji. But this did not happen here. It happened in Chicago, and the wounded soldier was a colored man. The thugs who committed the outrage disapproved of his complexion, and complexion has of late been a frequent pretext.for murder in that enlightened city. It isn’t very long since Chicago was telling East St. Louis what a shocking, riotous place that city was. And lately took the same -attitude toward Washington. Chicago has told: a good many places what they ought to do and be.* And per- haps a lot of places are not all that they should become. But they have one redeeming feature. They are not like Chicago. 1t is hard to pick out the ideal that we would copy; there are not many ideal cities. But at all events, we can find places to clgssxfy as awful warnings. We do, at ]east know what to avoi our prompt attention. First- class repairing in connection —— . BEMIDJI SHOE STORE - 315 -Minnesota Ave. PAULINE FREDERICK. The character of Bella Donna, the stellar role of the picture, is a re- markable one from the standpoint of art, but Miss Frederick succeeds in vesting it with verisimilitude and convincing sympathy. The story is powerful, the situa- tions dramatic and the heart appeal irresistable. © Miss Frederick is ad- mirably supported, her leading man being Thomas Holding. VEHICLE SUITS m. Those who witness the presenta- tion of “The Girl Dodger”- at the Elko theatre tonight will admit that Charles Ray, the Thomas H. Ince star in Paramount pietures, has been| supplied with a vehicle that suits him ‘“down to the ground.” It is a college story, wherein Mr. Ray is seen as a dreamy bookworm of a student. He takes the place of a lively fellow student and gets into a tangle wherein are involved an heiress and a chorus girl whose iden- tities confuse him. Theé finish is a THRILLING SCENE. An automobile-train collision in which nothing is left to the imagina- tion, is one of the outstanding thrills of the Vitagraph picture, ‘“Shadows of the Past,” which will be shown at the Grand theatre -last time to- night Anita Stewart,is the star. This collision scene is different from ‘the collision spectacles ordin- arily placed on the screen, in that the action is complete. Generally the action of such a scene consists of an automobile and train racing at angles toward each other at a cross- ing, and then a ‘“flash” of the ma- chine being tossed to bits. The automobile in this case is seen For the Range For the Stove to travel across the path of the loco- motive to safety, then to be struck at-the tonneau: And the further re- markable fact is that the occupants of the car are seen apparently in full animation and reality at the very moment of contact.
