NEW EGG GRADING SYSTEM GOES INTO EFFECT THIS WEEK FEdp‘Musl Be Plainly Stamped As To Quality; Protection For Consumers. 3 St. Paul, Minn. July 29.—The old ‘order of ‘‘eggs is eggs” is to pass in Minnesota, according to H. J. Holm; berg, state commissioner of agricul- ture, with the introduction this week of new egg regulatione ordered by the state department to promote fair dealing in eggs and to increase the market value of the Minnesota egg érop. 5 The subject of bulletin No. 1 is- sued by the new department of agri- gulture, the egg regulations were #dopted after a series of conference with producers, dealers and commis- sion men, also federal agents. . - “Only_such regulations have been adopted as will tend to place the egg busjness on a quality basis and, in this manner, secure the Minnesota farmer the best price for his pro- duct,” Commissioner Holmberg ex- plajned. “The restrictions are not intended in any way to prevent the free traffic in eggs, by honest buyers, but to place the business on a basis where guality will be recognized and loss will be eliminated. Producers, dealers and consumers should bene- fit alike under the scheme for grad- ing eggs as wheat is graded but on a simpler plan.” Eggs are classed as ‘‘fresh gathered,” ‘“‘held,”” “refrigerator” and ‘‘processed,” in the new state regulations, and are graded as “firsts,” ‘“seconds,” “dirties " “checks” and ‘rejects,” each class and grade being’defined in the bulle- tin. Rules are given to govern the packing, shipping and storage of eggs/ together with detailed miscel- laneous and suggestions for the care of eggs. Copies of the regulations, which will have the effect of law. may be] obtained from the state agricultural department at the capitol, St. Paul. MONTANA LEGISLATURE ENS SPECIAL SESSION | T0 HELP STOCKMEN Suffrage for State Is Also On| Slate; Road Improve- 1 ment on Boards. f N . (By United Pre: Helena, Mont., July 29 tana legislature opened a special ses- sion here today to enact emergency legislation necessary bhecause of the drouth. Governor S. V. Stewart, in his mes- sage to the legislature, briefly out- lined ‘the serious situation confront- ing both stockmen and agriculturists. Old residents of Monbana declare there has never before been such a serious drouth in thé state. Thou- sands of sheep and cattle have heen marketed thin because the ranchers were unable to pay for their transfer to grass lands or for feed to keep them from starving. Crops have been seriously affected. In many cases, the reduction in freight rates to re- lieve the situation came too late. Much stock literally starved. Whole trainload s of cattle and sheep have been shipped east for for- age. In some cases, the legislators learned, stockmen were unable to pay transportation and were forced to dispose of their stock at low prices In other cases, ranchers were given eredit and theirytock transferred but they .will sustain. a serious loss any- way. s - Ratification of the federal suffrage amendment is expected to be one of the first steps of the legislature. De- spite defeat of the first woman con- gressman—Jeanétte Rankin, who ran for semator last year—Montana is expected to ratify the suffrage measure with little debate. Giovernor Stewart has also asked the legislature to amend the road and highways laws, governing the high- way commission and the county com-| missioners in the butlding and im- provement of roads. The session is NELSON HITS FOOD POLICY. Washington, July Nelson of Minnesota war department policy of attacked the holding great quantities of surplus food from }. the market fo prevent upsettitg prices. He asserted that the people are entitled to a chance to buy this food. NOONAN WEARS A SMILE.
