. PAGE FQQR MALONE TAKES OVER POLO TEAM: RESIGNS NEWSPAPER POSITION Players Use Autos in Game; New Manager Former Bemidji Reporter. (Grand Forks Herald.) James L. Malone, has resigned as city editor of the morning edition of The Grand Forks Herald to become manager -of the All American Auto Polo team, which has been one of the main attractions at the North Dakota State fair this week. He will leave this afternoon for Brandon, Man., where the auto polo aggregation will appear at the Pro. vincial Exhibition during the com- ing week. Mr. Malone came to Grand Forks in the fall of 1915, as a reporter on the Morning Herald, continuing in that position until the entrance of the United States into the World war, when he enlisted in the United States navy. Did Good Service. As a radio operator he made sev- eral trips across the Atlantic on the United States transport Northern Pacific, and was in charge of the wireless operation on that vessel when it grounded on Fire Island early in 1918. His work during the three weeks the vessel was aground and efforts were being made to re- move the wounded men aboard, called forth the highest commenda- tion from his superiors. After the signing of the armistice Mr. Malone returned to Grand Forks, and became city editor of the Morn- ing Herald, a position he has held since that time. Few newspaper men in the North- west have more friends than “Jim- my”’ Malone, and it is generally hoped and expected that the suc- cess he has scored in the newspaper game will be more than duplicated in the new field he is entering. COURTMARTIALED MEN WOULD BE RESTORED (By United Press.) Washington,. July 21.—A bill to restore to the colors all soldiers, sail- ors and marines who have been courtmartialed. and restoring all forfeited pay and allowances, was in- troduced today by Senator Chamber- lain of Oregon. - Courtsmartial, involving charges recognized as felonies in civil courts, are excepted. CYCLONE FUND SLOW. Thus far, $33 have been donated to The Pioneer fund for the Fergus IFalls cyclone sufferers. The Bemidji Elks have sent the striken city $100. Bemidji people responded with a vim, when the call for help came from the Moose lake fire district and it is surprising that the cyclone fund does not grow more rapidly. Many towns in this viecinity have raised several thousand dollars for the fund and as a rule Bemidji is always in the lead. Previously acknowledged 0. E. Erickson Total COUNCIL MEETS TONIGHT. The regular meeting of the city council will take place tonight and there are some important matters to come bhefore the session. The coun- cil will meet in the quarters of the city clerk on East Third street, Baker's former jewelry store loca- tion. . STRENGTH OF ARMY. (By l"niled Press.) [ Wideawake Mexicana. A Mexican citizen of Mazatlan re- cently has been granted a concession of 100 hectares (about 247 acres), and 80 much more as may be necessary, at the railway station of Oso, state of Sinaloa, for the purpose of establish- ing an experimental farm to demon- strate the economic value which would result from the proper use of modern American agricultural machinery in the production of crops. It i8 the in- tention of the concessionaire to rent portions of the lands at a nominal cost to American manufacturers of agricul- tural machinery and implements, who may send experts to demonstrate the machinery wite the view both to pro- moting sales of the American goods and to educating the people in the more modern farming methods.
