The chief fiidings of the committee are: The number of persons in the United States addicted to the use of drugs “exceeds 1,000,000 at the pres- eht time.” Increase of the drug habit in the dry South lends many authorities to the conclusion that national prohibi- tion will swell the number of victims| ' «f narcotics. Illegitimate supplies of opium and ather drugs sre smuggled from Mex- 1go. and Canada and along the Atlan- tig and Pacific coasts and furnished tp 1,800 organized “dope” peddlers. Summary of Recommendations. The commiittee’s recommendations taclude strict enforcement of the pres- ent federal anti-narcotic act; addi- tional federal legislation; enforcement of state lnwsi concerted action on the part of state and 'mtunicipal govern- ments to suppress the illicit traffic; stopping smuggling of dope from-Can- nda and Mexico, “It is also recommended that edu- ‘eational campalgns be atituted In ull parts of the United States for the wpurpose of Informing the people of this country including the medical profession, of the serlousness of drug sddiction and its extent In the United ‘States,” says the report. The committee which made the in- westigation consisted of Congressman Henry T. Rainey of Illinois, Prof. Reed S. Hunt, Harvard university; Deputy Cormmlssioner B. C. Keith,. in- ternal revenue bureau, and Dr. A, G. Dumez, United States public health gervice.' “The number of Individuals addict- ed to the use of oplum, its prepara- tions or alkalolds, and coca leaves, Welir preparations or alkaloids, in the Uelted States has at various times Been estimated to be from 200,000 to 4000,000,” says the committee, “These 4stimates must, however, be looked WPpon as mere guesses. { “Owing to the lack of laws and reg- &flnm making it compulsory for the nflntmtlon of addicts, it has been im- ible for the committee to obtain taformation which would give the ex- 'get- number of nddlcts In lhe Unlteu 3 Causes ‘of Drug-Addiction. " ¢! The c¢auses of drug addiction in the ‘apder of frequency were given by po- Wee authoritles as follows: Use of flyxiolun’n' prescriptions, assoclation with other addicts, prohibition, use of narcotic drugs for chronic diseases, «sariosity to learn the effect of the &rug, prostitution, use of patent or weoprietary megicines, use of certain .motlc drugs as a stiinulant, idle- wess, und use by dentists. “What effect, if any, nation-wide prohibition will have on the situation’ ssuld not be definitely ‘determined by e committee,” the report says. “The eshsensus appears to be that the num- wer of addicts will Increase as soon. a8 the prohibition laws are enforced. This opinion apparently receives some smpport from investigations made in aeme of the southern states where pro- Ribition has been in:effect for some years.” FINDS CLUE TO BURIED GOLD ®ustodian of Ruins of Jesuit Mission in Arizona on Track of Ancient Tressure. “Tucson, Ariz—What I8 believed to ®e the first clue to.the reputed buried tweasures of the padres of the Tuma- . ameori mission, built by Spanish Jesu- s high up in the Tumedcacori moun- wains, less than three hours’ " journey fwom Tucson, has-been discovered by Frank Pinckley, custodian of the pains.
