Large sums of money was spent at intermals to.bolster up the water plant and keep what supply.of the calibre of ‘water available from entirely ceasing. Time after time orders were issued to “boil the water” or “don’t use hose oun.laws or gar- dens” or use the hose only at certain intervals. The: water'b came foul and the odor made it imperative. that.it. be. hoiled. Still the discussion and diversion of opinions over expense to keep a possible epidemic from spreading;death:. A-bond issue was recently defeated to instal] a new system. It wasn’t un- derstood as it should have been. Finally the council took the bull by the horns-and: headed by Mayor Vandersluis at the time, contracted with the Lahn- Bowler well company for three pumps. guaranteed. to supply a million gallons capacity of pure water from the city wells. Two of the pumps were. installed and-a capacity.-of over 1, 000,000, gallons was possible, but the forcing: meant the pres-, Elvidge i# a brilliant cast com; ex;n. swift-moving and ntenlon-nlp— n ping. -IEWIS’I THING/IN MOVIES.. ““Topios of the Day”—bright, witty caustic, comments, on eveuu of ‘the day, collé nd- produced by “the uum-y Dlgest" magazine— is the mewest thing .today in.motion theatre in connection with their reg- ular program. - HUMAN ENDURANCE. |, an added feature of the big attraction . tonight. These ponderous ani- imals are handled and performed by 'Miss Dottle Snyder, the only lady elephant trainer in America today. || To see this act alone: would satisfy one ,that they: had their money’s worth, but the management presents 23 more high class acts amongst them. The water problem is solved for years to come and the person who is kicking hasn’t been heard. e " 'ADVICE GRATIS If the kmg of the Kokofu, West Africa, clothed at the center of his frame with: a- trifle of verdant foliage, and alto- gether unclothed elsewhere, walked through Bemidji to the corner of Beltrami avenue and Third street, mounted: a soap box, and addressed a gathering of our fellow-townsmen on the urgency of repaving the streets, our fellow-townsmen would probably look at him sideways. They would doubtless question the propriety of other things besides his costume. They might even inquire if it was any of his d business how. we pave our streets. They might even unkindly suggest that he give his atten- tion to pavement problems among the Kokofu. Our sidewalks are, takmg them by and large, our own business. Yet in Winnipeg we find that a number of talkative en- thueiasts }'xsve begun to tell President Wilson how to improve America.” 'And in Denver, Colorado, another crowd of altru- ists have been sending instructions to the Canadian premier. A little earlier, a small group of: philanthropists migrated from our shores to Europe, to tell Lloyd George wkat to do with Ulster. The breaking down of international barriers is .an excel- lent project, if it makes for brotherhood. And only a profes- sional pessimist will declare positively that it cannot. But if it does, the result will only develop out ‘of infinite diligerfce —infinite patience—infinite caution. It will not be.automat- ically percipitated. - is made pessible -by a.most. remark- able case of dnu’hle identity between Dan and a rascally cousin, of whom he had never heard A First National Exhibitors cir-| cuit (Inec.) feature will be shown at| the Rex tonight, and that it will be of unusuzl interest is-assured !t is porter and its’ utlo is “Alimony.” The picture is a story of real llte, | taken from actual facts' and is-ab-| sorbing throughout. feature will also be shown tomorxow. There will also be-a good comedy as It will be indefinitely postponed if we impulsively rush| to transform internal conditions in each others’ homes, and persistently neglect our own. However little we- know about our own affairs we know even less about our neighbors. We shall be like the primitive settlement on the desert island where the inhabitants made a precarious livelihood by taking in each others’ washing. ———— e SEND THEM TO BEMIDJI (Baudette Region) ; C It is enough to make a white-robed angel swear to hear people say that because the Bemidji Normal, is.a-new institution it will require a few years.to get it up to.standard; and‘that it would be poor judgment for high:school :gradirates: to finish their education there. One of the best'staffs in'the country will be in charge of the Bemidji institution, the residents of the| city are getting behind it to make it the best Normal in.the state, and from where we sit it-looks as if they will succeed. There are twelve fupils in.Baudette and Spooner ready to en- ter Normal and a dozen.of them ought to go to the Bemid)i school. iz SO S WHAT THE “OTHER SIDE” REVEALED With a federal penitentiary sentence at Fort Leawenworth staring him in the face, ‘“‘Spider” Gagnon of Bemidji showed that “something” of which.all men are possessed and-bent to the heroic task of rescue;of the. injured at Fergus Falls. It so happened that the district attorney and judge:before whom, he.was tried saw: his actions, unknown to the offender.” When tired and worn from his efforts at relieving the suffering, Gag- non faced the court to hear what would be done with him. His ears fell upon strong commendation and high praise-for his out- cropping manhood and he was told sentence: was suspended. - Both the attorney and judge :did the right thing. S i It is up to Bemidji.citizenry to take -advantage of the great- est publicity campaign it ever had the opportunity to receive when the editors of the state come Friday and Saturday, for the three days convention of the Northern Minnesota Editorial. as- sociation. Courteous attention for their convenience wiil mean strong commendations in the press of the state for Bemidji. s e e o : ' George F. Kreatz, who was awarded the contract for re- modelling the city building, informed the council, when asked how long the work would require, “about ninety days.” ' When completed, according to the plans.and specifications. of Archi- tect Richardson, the building will be one:that can be-pointed.to with pride and be in good sexvice for several years.
