’ NATIONAL CAPITAL| b Washlngton, June 10. (United Press)—They're - talking of moving ‘the capital, and gosht the rproflteers -are “scayed!” Senator Sherman, llllnol a plain spoken man who' goes marketing with a basket on his arm, and who is the new chairman of the District of Col- umbia committee, started it all when he said if Washingten landlords and merchants didp’t stop charging, so much for things, congress ought to get up and take the capital city out to Iowa, or some place away from here. Washingtonians took is seriously, ‘because Sherman has said some mighty serious things about profiteer- ing .here, in senate speeches. The president of one of the numerous “civic pride” organizations which flourish in Washington hurried to Presidential Secretary Tumulty to learn Wwhether there really was a possibility of congress and the gov- ernment departments going west, leaving nothing here but the Poto- mac and the Washington monument. Since Sherman made his remark, offers have come from several states (made quite unofficially of course, _but in some cases by influential citi- “zens) to have a real honest to good- ness capital city set up in those com- monwealths, with an iron clad guar- antee against profiteering. * Senator Kenyon said. he kpovws|" :Towa would do the job ‘right,:and Senator Reed asked that the claims of St. Louis be not overlooked. Sema- tor Harding spoke feelingly of the Ohio climate and Hiram Johnson de- clared California would prove a matchless place for the capital. Sena- tor Sheppard proposed Texas: and Senator Sherman himself modestly suggested that Chicago wouldn’t be a bad choice. And now most any day it is likely that some chipper congressman will really introduce a bill-to do it, thus .throwing ' the Wnshlngtonlans who lived here before the war into new apprehensions lest the source of theip new wealth be suddenly cut off. CHURCH CONFERENCE TO START WEDNESDAY With Rev. C. W. Foley and Rev. J. P. Welliver as the speakers and Roy T. Brown, soloist and chorus ‘leader, a five day Prophetic confer- ence will begin in the Bemidji Bap- tist church and'the Fifth ward Con- gregational church tomorrow even- ing. The Baptist church speaker will be Rev. Foley, who will discuss “A Twentieth Century Message.” The Congregational church conference opening will be made by Rev. Welli- ver, his address being, “The Lord's Return a Gospel Fundamental.” SECOND ARREST IN BACKUS CASE IS MADE IN SEATTLE John Berger, accused by -Edward ‘W. Backus, Minneapolis lumberman, of being one of a pair of Alaska min- ing men who defrauded. him of $25,- 000 in a gold mine transaction, was arrested yesterday in Seattle. ()' Ww. Ashby, the other man accused by Backus, was arrested last week. Ashby and Berger, according to a message from Seattle, are emphatic in their denial of any wrongdoing; declare they will fight extradition and announce they will make the Minneapolis lumberman defendant in a civil action to force him to per- form his part in the deal that led to their arrest. £ Instead of being guilty of crime, both Ashby and Berger insist they acted in good faith. Their version of the affair is that Backus promiged to invest $100,000 in the develop- ment of the Alaska property, that he paid down only $25,000, and that they will invoke the aid of the courts to make him pay the balance. ‘Berger was arrested after a chase up the Pacific coast that started in San Francisco, led through towns of the Pacific porthwest and finally ended in Seattle. Rev. and Mrs. Blaine Lambert left Monday evening to attend com- mencement at Hamline university. Mrs. Lambert will visit relatives in Mankato for several weeks andyMr. Lambert will' return Wednesdny night to accompany a delegation of Epworth Leaguers to the district convention at Alexandria. John Larson, Esther McGhee and Alice Minnick are the delegates from the local chapter, and the young ladies will each present a paper in the pro- gram. - Keen the potatoes well cultivated.
