Moreover, there is always the pride of race to incline men of adventurous spirit to hold life light in dangerous enter- prises when the world is awaiting the issue. To young Rayn- ham and his airmmate Morgan is would seem like showing the white feather to back.out of an attempt to fly the Atlantic be- cause daredevil Hawker and thin-lipped Commander Grieve had failed and died in the venture. And yet Raynham once fell 2,000 feet, or partly planed and partly fell to earth in an “acci- dent,” and spent several months in a hospital bed, while Mor- gan is a one-legged veteran of the air, and has been*old b, physicians that his recent injuries should keep him on_the ground hereafter. Public opinion would like to issue an injunc- tion against their setting out over the Atlantic, but the law against attempting suicide is not technically applicable. The Atlantic may be flown without a stop, possibly in June, when halcyon weather prevails, but the odds against the success of a small plane with one engine should be deterrenf. To stake all on its limited motive power, not to speak of the frailty of wings of narrow spread, seems like courting death. If the At- lantic passage is to be achieved, it must be by a big biplane powerfully engined. That seems to be the bhest professional opinion. “I believe,” says Commander Towers, “a transAtlan- tic flight is practicable without a stop with planes a little larger than the NC type.” There is one machine in New Foundland answering the description, the Handley-Page. It is a little| larger than the NC type, the plane spans being, respectively,| 130 feet and 126 feet. The hull, as one would say of a ship, is| almost ten feet longer in the Handley-Page. The fuel capacity| of the British machine is 2,000 gallons, that of the American | NC is 1,800 gallons. Fully loaded, the Handley-Page weighs]| 32,000, the NC 28,500 pounds. Each is equipped with four en- gines, and it is a case of the British Rolls-Royce against the American Liberty; both of them have come through many se- vere tests. | ’ . A speed of 100 miles an hour is claimed for the Handleyl Page with full load, and for the NC 80 miles. But NC-4 has done better than 80. Of course, with tanks lighter as the hours pass, each type increases its speed. Toward the end of a long flight two engines, or even one may bring the plane to its desti- nation. There is a chance for the Handley-Page in New Found- lang to fly across the Atlantic, and doubtless the trial will be made. —e Qe e—— It is gratifying to observe that the farmers of Beltrami county are putting such unlimited: faith in cooperation.. 'They realize that in cooperation they will receive great benefit in practically every phase of their farm activities and effort. The meeting of wool growers held Friday at'which the Beltrami County Wool Growers association was formed is but another acknowledgment by the farmers that by uniting their efforts, interchanging ideas, assisting in the providing of uniform crops and the producing of uniform livestock and the bettering of market conditions they may more successfully and profitably secured the best. ! ~Beltrami county may be the home of the next secretary of state. Otto Diercks, of Baudette, who was clerk of the house appropriations committee during the last session and who is day. In his role of Al Boyd, a wealthy rancher, the brilliant artist surpasses even his notable character- ization of Johnny Wiggins in his celebrated stage success, ‘“‘Johnny Get Your Gun,” and is given Areer rein to demonstrate-his right to screen stardom than was afforded him in any of his previous Betzwood successes. Boyd is visited by Robert’ Swift- corporation, who -seeks~ to :purchase Boyd'’s ‘interests,. ‘With ‘bfm?ig" his daughter, Betty (Ormi - Hawley), with whom Boyd - is -immediately smitten.” She spurns his offer of mar- riage, and in order to win his way into Betty’s good graces, Boyd gives Swiftmore a three months’ option. Misfortune overtakes the financier, and to save the family fortune Betty wires Boyd to come East and claim her, The marriage of convenience and the scheming of Betty’s former suitor lead Boyd into innumerable scrapes, but his indomitable courage triumphs against overwhelming odds in'the end, Though not until the hardy Westerner' is enmeshed in a series of thrilling situations to which only dare-devil Louis Bennison could do tull justice, CHURCHES ST.
