Uniforms are daily becoming more scarce on the streets and in public places. There are not so many automobiles on the streets either. Where motor cars whose owners could not find garages were once parked throughout the residence.section, such a sight is now a rare one. Theatres formerly were sold out from footlights to gallery. Now there are ferquently vacant seats. The long lines outside the popula: priced restaurants have disappeared too and one can get a meal without fighting for it. The exodus is on. SUNNY ITALY DOES NoT APPEAL TO NELSE JOHNSON Andrew Johnson, sheriff of Bel- trami county, has received a lengthy and interesting letter from his brother, Nelse Johnson, who has rep- resented the Emerson-Brantingham Emplement company in Russia and other countries and is now in Ales- sandia, Italy. Johnson does not enthuse over the climate or condi- tions in Italy and he says: ‘‘That sunny Italy business that you hear 80 much about is a big humbug. I have seen less sunshine and felt the cold more since my arrival in Italy than I did in snow-bound Russia. Food conditions here are serious, the prices being high, the quantity small ond the quality poor. I lived chear- er while in Russia and had better food. To hear some of the Italians talk you would think that they won the war unaided and alone.” CAPTAIN EATON PRAISES - WORK OF BEMIDJI TARS “The best equipped and best trained of any body of men that went into the navy,” {s.the compliment paid members of the old Minnesota naval militia by the chief of the naval bureau, according to Captain Guy A. Eaton of Duluth, who de- parted a little less than two years ago in charge of that organization just after war was declared. Captain Faton, on turlough in Du- luth, recalled that men from the Gopher unit have established en- viable records, many of them be- roming petty officers, others commis- sioned officers and still others placed in very responsible positions. Men who left here wearing the gold bars have in wome cases been *promoted into some of the best positions, - . DRY CLEANING ' Clothes Cleaners for Men, Women and Children . -WANTED.
