With this issue of The Pioneer, the editor for the past two years ceases his labors and will be succeeded by H. Mayne Stanton, who has become a stockholder in The Pioneer Publish- ing company, and who will succeed to the editorial desk. It is with pleasure that we look back over our period of service to The Pioneer and the people of Bemidji, for it has been two years filled with interesting incidents and brought on by the great war, yet progress in many directions on the part of the city and its peoples. True, there were times when at- tention to some things might be judged in some quarters as a trifle severe, but the attitude was believed for the best of all concerned, with no animosity, and the hearty co-operation of of the Artic through the agency of a pair of baby shoes. There will also be a comedy, stars ring that weatern character, Tom Mix in “Roman Cowboy.” SPECIAL SUNDAY BILL. i Tomorrow will be presented at the Rex a special Sunday bill. ‘‘Johnny ion the Spot,’” the latest Metro pic- ture in which the dynamic young actor, Hale Hamilton will be the at- traction, It is a play of rapid-fire comedy- drama which gives this noted star a role particularly suited to his alert and virile capabilities, The story is that of a young man who, for some time, believes that everything comes to him who waits— what eventually changes him into the galvanic Johnny who is always on the spot is thrillingly shown in this play which will appeal to all ages. Strollers, a Chicago Lyceum quartette in a rare program. ‘this quartette has an “off day” in going through Bemidji and has been secured by the Duluth. There will: also be a splen- did comedy as a feature. warm friends is certainly appreciated, in the light that all policies were toward the upbuilding of the interests of the city and its peoples. Bemidji is on the threshold of the big things. The coming year holds much in store and we would urge close co-operation on all sides for the success of contemplated plans. In the coming of Mr. Stanton to the editorial helm of The Pioneer, one of the best known and most capable newspaper men in Bemidji and this part of the state, will be in direct charge, and we bespeak for him loyal support in every effort which will in any way benefit the community, as it is the newspaper that reflects the spirit of the community in which it is published. ! Good bye. 0 BONUS FOR SOLDIERS WISE ACT. The section of the revenue act approved February 24, 1919, which authorizes the payment of a sixty-dollar bonus to all soldiers and sailors honorably discharged from the service, | is a piece of fair and wise legislation. | The nation has tken these men from positions where they were earning a living and has employed them in its defense at a wage less than they were receiving. It is incumbent upon it to protect them against the chance of delay in finding em- ployment. If a man goes directly back to a position the bonus will be useful to him. But if it takes time for him to secure employment the sixty dollars will be a wonderful help in tiding him over. oy Those who are discharged hereafter will receive the bonus with their final pay. Soldiers who have been discharged and| have not received it should communicate with the zone finance officer, Lemon building, Washington, D. C., stating particulars’ and enclosing their discharge certificates. Sailors discharged without the bonus should make claim for payment upon the| naval bureau of supplies and accounts at Washington. 0 AN EXAMPLE OF HUN GOVERNMENT. Inhuman, to say the least, but characteristic of the breed in control of affairs in Germany, was the fate meted out to the hundred who styled themselves Spartacans, in the capital of Germany. i The nation is ruled by an elective body to which the faction of the Spartacans is opposed, and strife and bloodshed has been| the result. With the capture of the revolutionists in the inci-| dent mentioned, they were chained together, huddled in the| court yard, while government gunners poured into the fettered | humanity the deadly fire of the guns and slaughtered them! unmercifully. All in the name of democracy. ——-()- ALSO A DUTY TO PERFORM. For many years now we have laid great stress on the rights and privileges of the American citizen, forgetting or ignoring the fact that with every right or privilege there.is also a duty. The time has come when we must put our full atten- tion to these duties, and we should be as conscientious in their discharge as we have been insistent in demanding our rights and privileges. 0. If it would be an incentive, it might be a good thing to increase the salaries of janitors of buildings maintained by the taxpayers, so they wouldn’t have to wade ankle deep in water and slush when they are obliged to use said walks. It would also conserve the line of “pink” expressions and com- ments. k -0 In W. T. Noonan’s weekly letter to The Pioneer he reports the appropriation item for a dormitory for Bemidji’s new nor- mal is meeting no opposition. Looks very much as if it would be passed and it should be. 0 Speaking about the division of Beltrami where would the burden of ditch bonds payment fall? should be a problem for careful consideration. 0 Representative Knutson who has been chosen house whip, is said to have given satisfactory evidence of his spanking qualities.—St. Paul Dispatch. county, just That MYSTERY TITLE. To those not acquainted with Rex Beach’s widely read novel. ‘“The Brand,” the title of his newest photo- drama must hold considerable mys- tery. Known to bea story of Alaska, the meaning of tne strong title is not known. It will begeen that his usual discriminating sense:of the fitness of things guided Rex Beach in giving “The Brand” to the drama. The name is applied physically and stands for the hatred and contempt of s not fit to kill. There are years of angulsh and infamy behind this ac- tion, born of the monotony and the loneliness that come with the hush of the white wild. “The Brand,” in seven parts, will be shown tonight and tomorrow, matinee and evening at the Grand theatre. ALICE JOYCE. Alice Joyce in “The Captain’s Cap- tain,” a Vitagraph drama, with the next episode of *“The Iron Test” will be the program at the Grand theatre Monday and Tuesday next. “The Captain’s Captain” is a delightful comedy-drama, the scenes of which were taken in one of the old fishing towns along Cape Cod. ELKO PROGRAM. George M. Cohan, last appearing on a Bemidji screen in “Seven Keys ‘o Baldpate,” will be seen in his fam- ous play ‘“‘hut the .Trail Holliday,"” ain Artcraft picturs, in the Elko theatre tonight, arid Sunday, matinee ind evening.
