Government Justified In Stimulation of Pork Production—Sevenfoid Increase OFr Pre- ! War Exports. Through increased production and conservation we will be sble this year to export seven times our pre-war average exports of pork products. With the heayy demands added in car- ing for the millions who have been freed from German oppression, the Department of Agriculture and the Food Administration are justified to- day in our every acglon of stimulation of hog production. In the coming year the' greatest world shortage ‘will be In fats, and pork will help to save this situation. The efficacy of the policy of stimulated production has built up in this country supplies which will en- able us to supply & very large part of the fat defictency of the world. In beef there must be a shortage in Ku- rope, due largely to limited refrigera- tor ship capacity. All freezer ships available, however, will be filled by America, Argentine and Australia. The contribution ‘made by the pro- ducers of this-country to the war pro- gram as applying particularly tp ani- mal food products is {llustrated by the following : ‘Reports compiled by the U. B. De- partment of Agriculture Indicate am inerease in cattle of 10,238,000 head and 12,441,000 hogs. These figures were compiled to January 1 last, In this period there was & decrease in sheep of 819,000 head. The indica- tions are that this decrease will show an Increase, according to recent re- ports. Sinve January 1. unofficlal informa-~ tion indigates an:increase;in:hogs of not, lesa. than 8. per cent. and ‘not more than 16 per cent. as compared with one year ago, with an increase fn the average weight, Following the .request of the U. S. Food Administration for an increase In hog production for marketing tn the fnll of 1918 and the spring of 1919 the {ncrease may yleld not less than 1,600, 000,000 pounds more of pork products than were avallable last year. With- out this Increase the shipping program arranged by Mr. Hoover regarding an. imal food. products would have been impossible, The dressed hog products durlug the three. months ending - September. 80, 1917, amounted to 903,172,000 pounds, while for the corresponding months of 1018 the dressed hog products totaled 1,277,589,000,. an. Increase of. over 374, “)}).000 pounds for the quarter. During the same period for 1917 thd records. of = Inspected slaughter of dressed - heef . showed 1,203,000,000 pounds as against 1,454,000,000 pounds for the three month period ending September 1, this year. But presently “the nurse could see that something was worrying him. Finally he became so restless that she summoned a surgeon. “Better try and find out what he wants,” he directed. “Poor devil, he may want to leave a last message for his people. There's a good chance that he won't pull through.” Over him the nurse bent, ears at- tuned for some sob-compelling dging sentiment. “Say,” the ghostly whisper came slowly from blistered lips. “Say, do you get a wound stripe just for being gassed?” Houses From Barns, In the growth of our towns and sab urbs, especially in the older ones places of several ‘acres are frequently divided {nto . smaller building lots, writes Helen Bowen in the House Beautiful. Such places usually have barns or stables which are often suffls clently well bullt and In sound enough condition to be remodeled into houses. Ia the present high cost of lumber and labor, the saving is worth considering, though it varies greatly in”dif%erent cases. If the harn has a good fouuda- tion, a strong, sound frame, and does not require much altering in size or shape, the saving will be considerabla Find more wheat, It came; more pork, it came; save sugar, It was done, So Americans answered the challenge of German starvation. .
