Minneapolis, Sept. 13.—Major ohn D. Yost, commander of the dis~ rict of Minnesota, U. S. A, recruit- ast night to 25 of the recruiting of- icers of the state, in their honor and o show his appreciation of the re- markable work they have performed. Twenty-two of them leave tonight for Jelfferson Barracks for assignment to active service. A distinguished guest was Gov- ernor Burnquist. In appreciation of their chief, the recruiting officers made him a pres- ent of a handsome silver loving cup, and to Lieutenant De Costa, his chief aide, was given a ‘“‘swaggerstick.” In replying to the presentation of the gift, major Yost thanked the men for their aid and for their work and lauded the patriotism of the entire state. He spoke of Bemidji as a bright star in the state and referred to Bemidji as his “Minnesota home.” Among the recruiting officers pres- ant was Sergeant Foucault of the crack Bemidji station. Bad Habit to Cultivate. The habit of dissipating every ser: ous thought by a suggestion of agree- able sensations Is as fatal to happi- ness as to virtue; for when amuse- ment is uniformly substituted for ob- ects of moral and mental interest, we lose all that elevates our enjoy- ments above the scale of childish pleasures.—Anna Maria Porter.
