Bix: months WILD HUMORS The ecirculating of extravagant rumors and wild tales of victory is as harmful to the interests-of this country .in the present struggle as the spreading of adverse reports. Recent- Iy the report was flashed from one end of the country to the other of a great allied victory on the western front. In many parts of the country people went fairly wild with joy, only to be cast into corresponding depths of dejection on learning that the report was unfounded. Our people should give ear to no reports that do -not came from a reliable source. Telegraphic news in the papers, from --reputable news agencies, can be relied upon as ‘being correct, or approximately so. The metropolitan. dailies as a rule have reliable special correspondents on the front, and their reports - also can be received as truth.- But reports- circulating from English Like Hiking. Ay A diligent study of American news- papers discloses “many -crazes’ ‘that seize the people -ot these islands, which the islands themselves seem |43 strangely unaware of, r ‘From guch a source I learn that hik ing is very popular in England, where “g party of young people, sens{ly[;lé - dressed and with" staves, ‘start at<six or seven o'clock in the morning, carry. | a few sandwiches and a drink, w: along country roads until noon, picnic |- and rest during‘the héat of the ‘day,| and then walk home ‘in ‘the cool of the evening, refreshingly tired for such a night’s sleep as only the true hiker knows.” B g pparently it is the latest name for a country ramble. Anyhow, Americans are being persuaded to hike more, the result of which is an increased sturdi- ness o0f mind and body.—London Chronicle. 2 ek Something New. Publisier—Here is a letter from a man thanking us for sending a re- porter to rouse him at half-past eleven at night to tell him some good news. City Editor—Jumping =~ Josaphat! Most men waked up by a reporter at. half-past eleven throw the furniture, at him, : KEEP LOOKING YOUNG It’s Easy—If You Know Dr. Edwards’ Olive Tablets The secret of keeping young is to feel young — to do this you must watch your iver and bowels — there’s no need of having a sallow complexion — dark rings under your eyes — pimples — a bilious look in your face — dull eyes with no sparkle, Your doctor will tell you ninety 4 " mouth to mouth frequently start from nothing but grow with'| po the telling. g In justice to the news agencies and newspapers of the coun- try it should be said that none of these fake reports have organ- ized or been circulated by them. Such reports in most cases, | if they could be traced to their original source, would be found |bioyancy to have a sinister origin—enemy propaganda, with a view'to disturbing the peace of the country and creating excitement. and unrest. 4 e We should keep cool and believe nothing that is not fully| vouched for, trust in our government and our armies, and put our evary energy into OUR part in the winning of the war. ¥ BELTRAMI NEEDS A DECENT REPRESENTATIVE " There is one thing to remember in enumerating the quali—A fications of candidates for the office of representative from Beltrami county in the state legislature, and that is-that above all things he should not be aligned with the liquor forces or any of that ilk. Beltrami county has had a desperate time wrestling with the illegal liquor traffic, and the election showed that the de- cent people of the county are in the:majority and refuse to be dominated by a booze gang which only seeks to.make money out of it, no matter in what ‘manner. Even now, the booze makers and their henchmenrare industriously at work to evade the laws of the government, the supreme court of the state and the order of the Public Safety commission. It will take hard fighting to eredicate this nefarious business.and what.goes with it, and Beltrami county should be represented by a decent, law abiding citizen and not a representative who winks at the gang and the “game.” . It means that probably for the first time in your rathert careless life you have the chance to become a really necessary cog in the great wheel of progress. It’s the turning point in your life, son. Be sure you make the right turn. g @. A New York man, according to newspaper dispatches, has appealed to the courts to compel his wife to keep silence. There isn’t 4 man in Beltrami county who would.do that, for where in the district could he find a judge with nerve enough to under= take to impose such a sentence? ¢ An effervescent press agent refers to the voice of the noted opera singer, Galli-Curci as “bottled moonshine.” We don’t know what Galli’s prices are, but around in Beltrami county that commodity sells around $5 or $6 per quart. We've been agitating our thought reservoir in an attempt to figure out what old Father Time did with that lost hour when we set our timepieces ahead. If that German drive on the western front was a defensive —and the kaiser insists his war is a defensive one—we should not like to be in a German offensive. It might be hinted to those patriots who are so patriotically holding onto their earthly possessions that Liberty Bonds at 4.1-4 per cent will be much more attractive than a direct tax.
