OFFICIAL COUNTY AND CITY PROCEEDINGS — ADMINISTRATION RIGHTFULLY REBUKED . There is every indication of the election of Irvine Lenroot, Republican, to the United States senatorship from Wisconsin -over Joseph Dav1es, democrat,” and Victor Berger, socialist, and the result is a deserved rebuke to President Wilson, Vice President Marshall and those others who shout up the same speaking tube of the administration. Congressman Lenroot has done everything that any other congressman has done. Since the United States has been in war his record shaws that he has been one of the most ardent |t supporters of the admlmstratxon and its pohcles, recruiting _strength for the president in effecting legislation advocated by him. There is no questioning of Lenroot’s war record in con- gress, and his reply to his administration traducers when he quoted the peace utterances of the president sounded the de:.th note of the efforts of the attackers to encompass his defeat. pléas to lay aside all partisan politics and work for the elec- tion of those men who would uphold the president® in his policies. Lenroot had uphelc%the president in every detail. But wiren he sought, as was his Inalienable right, the vacant geat © in the senate, formerly ‘occupied by the late Paul Husting, the first note of blind partisanship heard was from the: White house, in a ringing endorsement of Joseph Davies, a democrat. If nothmg else contributed to the defeat of Davies it was this show of unalloyed bias for a democratic candidate on the part of the administration. Vice President Marshall was sent to the firing line to assault the integrify of Congressman Lenroot. He did so to his sorrow and the chagrin of even his own party| supporters. " "The attempts to jam down the throats of a 1epub11c:m state a democratic senator at the hands of the democrate * non- -partsan” administration were rightfully resented. Mr. Wilson has himself set the example of partisan polmcs, and there is slight doubt but that it w1ll be followed in many instances—by the chubhcans Before President Wilson wntes any more of his Eamous endorsements for personal polmcal reasons and sends Vice President Marshall out as an emissary of .political partisan- ship, it might be well to put on the soft pedal and buy a muzzle for the V. P. We don’t believe we’ll read any more of ‘that sulsh sent out from Washington on the laying aside of all partisan poli- tics. nger, either. It is recalled that Josh Billings once remarked, iIt is no credit to a cow to give a pail of milk and then step in, xt Seems to us that’s just about.what happened in Wlsconsm It was Lincoln who said, “I'don’ t think much cf a man whol is not wiser today than he was yesterday.” * Can’t be he was referring to Wllson and-his letter of endorsement to Dav1es, could it?
