Six months Three months i g - JUST CAN'T KEEP OFF THE ¢PIONEER?”.. . Since when, pray, did it happen’ that, a/receiver was ap- pointed for the mouths of the taxpayers and people:‘olf the city of*Bemidji? o . 3 ; Since when, did it come into being, that 1t_was~lese majesty . ‘for one who contributes to the support of the c}ty,:ta express his ‘honest opinions of affairs which concern him vxtg[ly? Since when, did it become beholden for one tobe tak.en'tg task by an individual or corterie for daring to exercise his in- alienable rights as a citizen of the United States?- Since ‘when, was any Sir Oracle: commissioned -judge and jury of the views and utterances of the taxpayers: ofiBemidji with regard to THEIR personal affairs? i e Since when, were the taxpayers of Bemidjii denied infor- mation of THEIR business, THEIR welfare and the, welfare of all? Since when, has the official custodian of the muzzles been: in power? And Y vent its little peanut vaporings upon those homes in Bemidji and “pay the freight?” “" "It sgeems to have reached the stage where some are labor- ing under the belief that it is an'offense against the government of the United States for the taxpayers of Bemidji to even: dare speak concerning the affairs of which they are vitally cognizant. Nothing done, it seems, that affects them must be~sp,o‘ken.'of nor mentioned without calling forth the frenzied vaporings’ of a disordered brain. When the people of the city of: Bprmdp are denied the information to which they are justly entitled it will be when the devil can skate in Hades. Gy £ For some unknown reason the official apologizer has again given generous space to an attack on the Pioneer. Teem- ing with insinuation and innuendo it seeks-to create an atmno- sphere derogatory to the Pioneer and it has just about asm_uch chance in its peruile antics as an Italiah orange peddler-in:a St. Patrick’s day parade. The Pioneer is held up as having endeavored to do something unworthy. ~ Insinuation and again innuendo is again directed at the Pioneer in a childish attempt at belittlement. Since when did it receive t gate to itself all that was holy?" ! For the information of the apostle of all that’s rightecus we ‘will state that THERE 1S NO. LAUNDRY MARK ON OUR COLLAR OTHER THAN OUR OWN. o b : 5 When the Pioneer stated that water had been pumpea: from the lake, or river, or wherever it is desired:to have it, into’ the drinking supply of the city it stated a truth. It also stated a truth when it stated that-the-people of the city ‘were not aware of it. Handbills may have been distrib} uted; as'they were, but it was in the afternoon and any one who: would state that the water consumiers of the city each re- ceived one, and knew what had been done early in the day, should be taken before:Probate Judge Harris and have his head ‘examined. It wasn’t the attempt to notify the people that is to be one bit discredited. It is a fact the people were not noti- fied except by handbills as substantiated by scores of com- plaints and- comments, many of which were vehement in the extreme. There is no camouflage about that. ; We don’t care for five seconds whether we were notified ornot. It wasn’t our show. But the columns of the Daily Pio- neer are open at all times to Mayor Vandersluis, and any other official of the city for their co-operation, that they may better serve the people of Bemidji. We know that hundreds of readers of the Pioneer NEVER SAW THE BILLS. It would have been to their advantage to have learned the truth. The day after the bills were circulated was when-the ‘‘explosions’ were heard from people utterly in ignorance of the occurrance. ‘And when they learned the facts they had their say despite the belief of some misguided individuals that they were subject to some dire penalty. That is where the weekly astonisher gets in some more of its' submarine stuff when it statesirelative: to :thé | dodgers ‘“and it is apparent that no better means could-have been secured to notify the people early than with dodgers, as the daily paper was not issued until-four hours after the dodgers were-in . practically - every home in the city.” : Yes, the daily paper was issued four hours after the dodg- ers were peddled promiscuously around and the assertion that people of the city were “notified,” with few exceptions; . is “bunk, pure bunk.” When the water was poured into-the drinking supply- of the city and the bills issued, they contained the warning **BOIL the WATER.” If that wasn’t of some significance to the water users-of the city what was the idea in sounding the warning at all? We didn’t go into any details nor-attempt to analyze the matter. No blame was attached to any one nor even insinu- ated nor intended. . E - THE WATER MAINS OF THE HOMES OF THE CITY WERE FILLED WITH IMPURE WATER:AND THAT'S ALL - THERE WAS AND IS TO IT NOW. Nq authorities were ‘“bitterly cxiticised’”. that had .a.per- sonal tinge. The people did enough' of7it,’and we takesit; it was THEIR PERSONAL business. ; o Relative to the city authorities havng abuse heaped up:| on their heads, there was none from us, not even a mention that-the water superintendent was not notified of what was being done, - . There isn’t, nor has there been, a more ardent supporter for a better water supply for Bémidji than-has the Pioneer. Nor is it of the past few days, either. It has long advocated an adequate and suitable supply of pure water for this city and is still urging-that the people of Bemidji co-operate with the city authorities to that end. It is a question of vital.im- port. We' don’t care who is responsible for'the water being turned ‘into the drinking and household-supply of. the city: We ‘are not the slightest interested -imr‘the matter-'except-as since when was the official chastizer empowered to D who make their he:divine dispensation to arro- water-users'toala we-do-believe-that-it-is-our:duty as‘a newspaper to-inform-its readers. of such occurrences as affects them and their homes -and-health. ) framtic efforts of | aresentitled to protection_and. to. know. the.real.faets of thei personal businees affairs, and ithnmil_ k'lnlmnum : infosmatiin #Frém Experiene of “Wéman »Whio WassBucossetul. 1 T wetighe@#¥140 pounds whemsl begam settingtin eondftion »ad n I lost nine pounds, without dieting, |any-of-the-strenuous-exercises-that go’ with the usual ‘training~says a writer in ‘Physical Culture, = = ; ~ I began by walking to the village.
