The activities of, the guardsmen in this direction have already re- sulted in great benefit. The questioning and rounding up of all whose identity is unknown has resulted -in none but the best interests of Uncle 3 Sam in his prosecution of the war. - r To the man who is duly registered and has his credentials, is given a word of commendatton and a smile. For the uninformed he is given prop'er instruction’ and all possible aid to assist him, and this is done in the right. spirit. R For the unregistered alien and the slacker, he is taken care of as|. prdvided by law and the latter is placed under the action of the govern- ment authorities, who generally see to it that he does not evade his duties to the exclusion of the sons and brothers of hundreds in Beltrami county. The guard members are of the leading citizens of Bemidji. There are bank presidents, bank officials, lawyers and other professional men, biisiness ‘men, merchants and all high in the ranks of business#and social affairs, and that they are gladly giving their time and efforts to this work is indeed little short of remarkable. ; N i 4 A WAIL FROM AITKIN ; ‘We understand that the powers that be at Aitkin are crabbing over allegations that Bemidjl’s crack high school basketball players smoke cigarets, wear their caps at an angle of 45 degrees, don’t shine their shoes, drink Coca Cola, stay out until nearly 10 o’clock some evenings and act perfectly awful, all of which is no nice way to do. And for the Aitkin boys to play basketball with them would have a tendency to corrupt the morals of the aesthetic young hopefuls who wear the letter ‘“A” on. their manly bosoms. And for these reasons a holler heard to Timbuctoo is raised against allowing Bemidji to play. Mercy! How that must agitate the finer sensibilities of Coach Jacobson, “old hoss” in the basketball game, to learn that his huskies are not in the class of the “wing sprouters.” ° We never knew before that the Bemidji winners are such a disgrace- ful set. But maybe sugar is getting scarce in Aitkin, or they’re running ghort of yarn. ot _— . OUSTED PRO-GERMAN MAYOR SEEKS COMEBACK / Newspaper dispatches state that Fritsche, deposed as mayor of New Ulm, is exerting himself as a candidate for mayor with the hopes of again becoming chief executive of that city. Fritsche and City Attorney Pfaen- der were removed by the Minnesota Public Safety commission for attem'pt- ing to hamper the work of the government in prosecgtlng the war against Germany, on account of their ancestry. i It would seem that there is some manner of squelching this man Fritsche in the light of what has happened. It was shown conclusively that ‘he was.opposed to the government and lent his best efforts in that direction. It would seem that he has escaped luckily from the hands of the-law. To send him back would be an endorsement of disloyalty: New Ulm will live long ’'ere her past is forgotten, if it is forgotten. Is New Ulm an AMERICAN city? We shall wait and see. S— THE SHORT TURN TRACTOR IS ASSURED It was with much gratification that the people of Bemidji learned of the success of the efforts of progressive Bemidji citizens to secure the Short Turn Tractor plant for this city. They are to be congratulated for their work and the success attending. g The newcomer to Bemidji’s industrial life is not the plant of years. It is-as those plants once were. It has the endorsement of those in posi- tion to know of its merits. There seems no reason why it should not grow and expand. There is every reason to believe it will and become an im- portant factor in this city and tractor circles. It has merit and it is spon- sored by those of wide and long experience. The Short Turn Tractor should be given every opportunity to make good. ; e procession. = at! the first note: In lowering flag, it should start donward at concluding: note. half-staff it should be raised. ‘ward, fingers extended and close gethier ‘(and‘thumb against palm' with a quick motion, then drop side. sion as to' how a woman should of hat directly-in front, lightly with forefinger, to side. response to a salute. and gavel. rest- on it. should .always-be at the left of the right.
