Pub- ; Hshed every Thursday and sent postage paid to any address, for, in o o OFFICIAL COUNTY AND CITY PROCEEDINGS ———— T *LET’S ALL GET TOGETHER ON WATER PROBLEM And while the question of an adequate and suitable supply of water is being seriously considered in Bemidji these days, with a look ahead, we - will start the ball rolling by making a suggestion. It is this: For several years Charles Warfield owned and operated the electric 3 plant of Bemidji. He did the pumping for the city water system, same as i8 now being done. No question but that Mr. Warfield is thoroughly familiar wjth the pumping plant, the electric plant in its connection and the water situation as it affects Bemidji. Mr. ‘Warfield is of Bemidji. He is interested fn Bemidji and bés no personal interest in the water works stuation, except as a good citizen, and we suggest that the Commercial club, the city council and all l_ntei‘ested citizens get together in a meeting at the Commercial club rooms and have Mr. Warfield address them, giving - his views, as to what he believes would be proper for Bemidj‘i to do under " the present circumstances. Ex Then an outside expert could be secured, if deemed advisable, and have him look over the situation and give his opinion. At the get together meeting, such as herein suggested, -everybody would have the privilege of asking questions of Mr. ‘Warfield, and in this manner a clear understanding could be obtained. This suggestion is made without consultation with Mr. Warfield, but we feel certain he would " gladly give any aid within his power for his home city in the present crisis. in the water supply. . FRNINES G LET- NOT THE CHILDREN’S MINDS BE POISONED We admire patriotism in the children. We are willing they should be drafted into every activity wherein their zeal and optimistic enthusasm has such splendid results. Let them sell baby bonds, push the Red Cross campaign and engage in any other activity that will further our cause in this great world war. But for their own dear sakes, le‘t's have them regard it all as just a struggle for the right. Hold before their little eyes the grand principles that animate us, and keep well in the back- ground the horrors that try our souls. Let us not -permit their young and innocent minds to become lqoculnted with the poison of hatred, Time enough in-after years to make plain to them ‘the horrors of the conflict. Just now it suffices that their country needs:-their enthusiastic services. & o ALSO CLEAN OFF THE WALKS WHEN IT THAWS - It is getting near spring and already requests ‘have been made to “Keep Off the Grass” of the lawns surrounding some of Bemidji’s public institutions, to prevent wearing of unsightly paths through the grass. This is a request that should, by all means, be respected. And while this subject is before the house, it might not be amiss to in turn ask if it i an impossibility to have the snow and ankle-deep slush ‘and_water cleared off the concrete walks of some of the said public institutions. i : —_— An Illinois soldier whipped twenty-five men in order to 'get the'man who called him a lar. That soldier is right in line for the scrap over in France where the Allies expect to whip five million men in order to get the man who keeps calling them liars—Kaiser Bill. —_—— The one redeeming feature of the Russian. muddle is that, when the daily papers are short of “feature’” news, they can always find ‘“‘another crisis in the Russian situation.” ' dogin o L If President Wilson succeeds in getting credit for winning the equal suffrage victory, it won't be the first time the last man on the band wa'gon got most of the glory. San Francisco’s new civic center is a grand example of this type. Many of our small cities have-simi- lar aspirations and some have made a splendid beginning. One’of these is the little city of Inglewood, Cal. But:now they are offered a Oarnegle lbrary and it is purposed to place it in the center or middle of the park system. ‘With such a precedent the whole area may some time be covered with build- ings so that where now 18 a generous and beautiful breathing place there will then be the most congested dis- trict in the municipality. Or, if but the oné building is allowed to violate the scheme all other public bulldings will be staring at this poor little structure, seemingly wondering why this one: impertinent individual has been allowed to so trespass and the re- mainder have been excluded.
