OFFICIAL COUNTY AND CITY mcmmos ‘The Daily Ploneer is & member of the United Press Amentlon, ul | nyrnnntcd for touln advertising by the «PIONEER” WILL DEFEND SUIT The Plonoer has been sued for the sum of $25,000 b; “ the ‘well known ditch attorney, who claims_that in wrm:u of the closing of the Campbell Lake club, of which he wasg prellfl‘nt, by the sheriff, the Pioneer deliberately attacked him personally, Insuflng * his reputation in Bemidji and vicinity. At the time the article was ‘Yt ten it was not known to the Ploneer that Mr. Andrews occupied the “portant position in the club that he did. The first intimation to-that fect was when Mr. Andrews personally informed the Pioneer. 'When:the article in question was written Mr. Andrews was no more in mind fllflil the czar of Russia, but it seems he has arrogated to himself as belns the object of some seeming personal attack on the part of the Pioneer. There is little to say at present regarding the Campbell lake house and what has transpired there. It has been closed by the o cers of the law and remains closed. When the proper time comes the Ploneer will hfive something to say—much so. ' The Ploneer will defend the suit. - x « THE PEOPLE ALWAYS RIGHT It has been the conviction of the greatest stntumen of all ages all countries that one could safely trust to the decision of the majority ot the people on any question that affected them. The public mind and con~ sclence is nicely attuned to the public welfare and seldom goes astray. Given a free hand in the working out of their destiny, no people would ever come to grief. It is only when self-seeking and deceitful leaders be_- cloud issues for their own selfish purposes that the people are seduced. So much preliminary to the assertion that the American people—the great, sober, reasoning majority—are right today. Without fuss and ‘feathers they have decreed a course of action that shall preserve the na- tional weal and the national honor, and they are not likely to be lightly turned from that course. “Vox populi, vox Del,” never had a more direct appHcation than to the attitude of the American people in the present world crisis. Being, then, the supreme power, the voice of the people should not only have, but ‘exercise, supreme authority. This we are failing to do. Our government is putting forth most herculean efforts to pilot the ship of state through the troubled waters, but they are hampered on every hand by those who, from a self Intprent that exceeds their loyalty, persist in throwing every obstruction possible in the way. Y This should not be, must not be. The lives of the thousands ot young men who have responded to their country’s call must not be jeopar— dized by the Judas at home. It is time that the great loyal mnjorlty fia- mand that the voice of the objector and obstructionist be silenced—if npi one way, then another. There is something crooked about a ‘“‘conscience’ that persists ln ar- “raying itself against the national conmscience. Such a ‘“‘conscience” 'F the creature of many and varied influences, none of which make for the best interests of American life. | It s time the reactionary were silenced. The peopla have spokcn and their verdict should be final. that country’s displeasure in no light degree. THE EGG SPECULATORS Justice is reputed to be blind, but sometimes strikes so truly we aré inclined to credit hér with Argus eyes. For some time now ‘the government has been beseiged to. inoludd eggs in the soldiers’ rations, and it now comes to light that the plrtlea 80 in- ‘tensely interested in the boys are the cold storage men. Accustomed af they are to “retiring” large quantities of eggs during the ln'y'l]_:g i&u‘on. this year they miscalculated the supply, and now they are caught with warehouses full and an almost normal supply still coming from the ial'msx Now they stand to lose heavily unless benevolent Uncle Sam ¢an be per- suaded to come to their relief. Uncle should relieve them by peremptorily ordering their, ‘ntoek; e thrown on the general market, and let the people once more make the acuaginfance of the fruit. T ; These are days when a fellow paws over every clothing ltock in town ‘and ends by going home and dragging his old winter suit from the' closet to which he consigned it last spring. The Kaiser of Germany and the Sultan of Turkey, wutklng ‘telher, ‘ought to cook up a very promising dish of “kultur” for the mations'of the world. : Every time the German crown prince loses a battle, the Kaiser takes @ fresh grip on his “divine right.” Market quotatlona show a considerable drop in pork, but it hnsn‘t had any effect on “ham and.” Vegetarians now have the opportunity of their lives to test the ac- turacy of thelr theory. “If the price of gasoline keeps on’ mwnung. it ‘ought to put & damper on tho automobile thieves. _m———- po A r— The traitor to his country should feel}, GRAHAM M.
