People who canmnot are as rare as people who can wiggle their ears. Of course, it is not everybody who is foolish enough to try it. And still fewer there are ‘who get a chance. - An évangelist in Pittsburg, Kan., did. For one short day—really too short a time for anybody to wreck a paper—he sat at the editorial desk of the Pittsburg (Kan.) Sum, seribbled copy and presumably learned from the copy boy how to write heads and not to use both sides of the sheet. For one day news and announcements for card parties, divorce cases and dances were excluded from the paper. 'A column and a half editorial attacking Christian-Science was printed on the first page. A ‘‘streamer” announcing that Pittsburg needed a Moses was emblazoned across the top of the sheet. And no record of a loss of subscribers is announced this phenomenon being explained, we presume, by the fact that the ass who posed as editor for a'day printed & twoicolumn picture of himself on the front page with the important confession that he was the guilty party for what was to be seen in the paper and that with the present issue his editorial spree was ended. SCHROEDER Bemidji Phone 66 to know what ‘would happen to.a newspaper ‘business 1f'it became a custom for editors to occupy two columns on the first page with their face, to scream for: Moses instead of printing the news and fill up space not otherwise occupied with attacks upon religious gects not their own. It would be interesting, also, to note how quickly 'some people could get over the fever of telling how & newspaper ought ‘to be run if they tried it once without promising their readers to quit forthwith. AMERICAN TEACHERS FOR AMERICAN SCHOOLS Newspaper dispatches contain the statement that Dr. Ernest Feise, assoclate professor of German in the University of Wisconsin, has been allowed to resign for his offensive remarks against the Liberty Loan. And this again brings up what we once remarked before, the question of employing foreigners for ipstructors of the youth of the United States in her public inatitutions. Yes, and in any other school or seat of learning. Gelse 18 a German, an alien and an enemy of the United States gov- ernment. He joined the staff of-the University in 1908 and at the out- break of the war took the oath required of German aliens by the Univer- sity to keep his mouth shut and mind his-own business. But Feise, the enemy alien, was unable to do so. Just why it is schools, colleges and universities of the United States should employ foreigners in their instructional corps is to us a mystery. In the United States there {8 as much brains and intelligence for every branch as there is in any foreign country. And it is blood that belongs to the United States and is loyal. It's about time school and university authorities throughout the country were relegating foreigners to the out- gide and employing good American men and women. The employing of foreigners is an' insult to the intelligence of Americans who ‘are capable in every detail to perform the duties in amy ‘school college, or university ever erected in the country. Besides increased taxation, the ex- penditure of the motion picture exhibitors for films, labor, fuel and ac- ‘cessories has advanced tremendously during the war. The exhibitors have borne this in- creased cost of operation as long as possible without an increase of ad- mission but now ask you to help.
