The voters of Beltrami county voted out the saloons August 14, 1916, by & legal majority, but the canvass showed otherwise. The drys took the case to the district court and it was decided that certain voters whose rights were in question were entitled to vote. The case was taken to the Supreme court of Minnesota and the court reversed the decision, denying that the voters in question were legal voters. Attorney General Smith says the saloons voted out have six months lease of life from the time the judgment was entered. - The Minnesota Public Safety commission issued orders regarding the . sale of liquor in Beltrami county and therein lies the difference. It may, perhaps, be law, to allow the illegal sales of liquor to con- tinue for six months after it has been declared illegal, but if a burglar was convicted for crime, it's a safe bet he would not be given six months more to continue committing burglaries and then allowed to quit un- molested. ' A LITTLE BUTTER CONSERVATION Here is the report of the Bureau of Markets of the United States De- partment of Agriculture, Washington, D. C., issued October 17, relative to butter. People of Bemidji and elsewhere have been urged to cut down on butter. This is where the butter is and the United States department of agriculture is authority for the figures, the report being given ver- * batim: Reports from 380 cold storages show that their rooms con- tain 104,293,375 pounds of CREAMERY BUTTER while on Sep- tember 1, 354 storages reported 100,839,277 pounds. The 332 storages that reported holdings on October 1, of this year and last show a present stock'of 97,456,876 pounds as compared with 100,621,673 pounds last year, a decrease of 3,064,697 pounds or 3.0 per cent. The reports show that during September, the Sep- tember 1 holdings imcreased 0.1 per cent, while our last report showed that during August, the August 1 holdings increased 14.4 per cent. Last year the decrease during September was 7.8 per cent and in August the increase was 3.3 per cent. A summary of this report was released by wire on October 11. As a num- ber of firms have not responded to our inquiries, this report does not include all holdings. . NO RAVAGING OF GAME RESERVE The fact that the Bemidji Game Reserve association is going after destructive hunting dogs roaming the game refuge at large indicates that no ravaging of the refuge is to be tolerated and that the name RESERVE is to mean what it implies. The reserve has been stocked with game in wide variety after much of it had been wantonly slaughtered both by resident hunters and a horde of outsiders whose sole aim was to see how much game they could kill, to “make a showing” as it were. The refuge is one of the biggest assets Bemidji has and the association is composed of men prominently identi- fied with Bemidji and farmers in the vicinity. Deer are commencing to come to the reserve and if left alone will become plentiful and the refuge become one of the most noted natural beauty spots in the country. The dogs mentioned in Saturday’s Pioneer have been seen hunting in pairs, killing what they could run down in the reserve. Not only have they killed practically all tame game in the reserve but they have trans- ferred their activities to neighboring chicken yards and there’s going to be less dogs roaming the country one of these days—if not taken care of. ACT IS TO BE HIGHLY COMMENDED The action of the Crookston Lumber company in subscribing $5,000 to the Liberty Loan, crediting that sum to Bemidji, is to be highly com- mended. When the first Liberty Loan was launched the Crookston com- pany subscribed liberally as a concern but no allowance was made for Be- midji’s share. This time, however, the company took $50,000 worth of the bonds, designating $5,000 for Bemidji and dividing the remainder among the places wherein are located the company’s industries and general offices. The act helped Beltrami county greatly in making good om its alloted quota. READ BETIDJI PIONEER ADS|tREBEMIDIIIEWELR YCO.
