There is hardly a decent, law abiding official but who is being singled out as a target for the active tongues of those who feel their feet slipping and whose feet have slipped. They prate loudly of short- comings; their prattle is that of the most childish nature. They act like spoiled kids and their mouthings are about as harmless as pouring water on the proverbial duck’s back. The traducers seem to forget the good old days. Talk about “incom- petency,” there are too many other things in gang rule days that could be mentioned and not usually termed ‘incompetency.” They are too well known in Bemidji to need repetition. It seems that this outfit has become deluded that THEY are the ONLY ONES in the community capable of conducting affairs in a PROPER man- ner. The Lord only knows that some of the conducting of the public af- fairs in the past has been enough to shame a safe blower. And the PEOPLE and TAXPAYERS of Bemidji KNOW IT. Ycs, and they know it TOO well. It is the wiggling of the tail of the old Looze garg, and the sun i3 going down upon them all too rapidly. The wiggle is growing fainter and fainter. And for such as these to cry “incompetence’” and attempt to be- smirch those in whom the electorate has confidence and the people honor, is indeed brazeness in its most brazen form. The Pioneer has fought for honesty and common decency in Bemidji and Beltrami county, yet there are a few who are oppose. to ihe Pioncer for such action. It has taken up the battle of the man 17ith the home, his good wife and his little ones. It has fought the battle of the wage carner along with his more affluent brother. It has endeavored at all times to make for a better Bemidji, where its fariliec might live in comfort and peace, God fearing and not obliged to be dominated and ccerced by a gang which knows aught hut spoils. And it is for this that the Pioneer has also incurred the enmity of certain persons. It will be remembered that when the people rose in their might they overthrow the ring that had so long for their slogan ‘‘To Hell With the People.” The people became sick and tired of the undercover ma- chinations and they will not again come under the domination of a lot of tin horn political “‘bosses.”” The men and women of Bemidji are of a high order of intelligence. They are not fools by any means, as some seem to believe. They will no longer accept the same old ‘‘con” smile and the threat to force them to move against their own conscience. They have as- serted their manhood and womanhood and they will do so again. Not the slightest doubt of that. It wasn't so long ago at a secret meeting of the ‘“‘leading ten,” held in a country home, with booze as the menu, that one of the best boosters for the booze game Bemidji ever knew arose majestically and solemnly an- nounced something in effect, “We’'ve got to again take control of Bemidji. There’s too many young fools running things. The town’s going to the devil.” And for that man’s information the young fools are not such BIG fools as he imagines. There is nothing dark nor mysterious in the grayations of certain ones who would shatter everything that Bemidjj has fostered for the best. They seek no opportunity to cc-operate. The word ‘“‘co-operate” isn’t in their dictionary. They do their stabbing in the back and without the courage to present themselves in the limelight of the gaze of the people. They pose as the criterion of all that is good and just, when if their records were held up to view they would look like a leopard’s hide. The county attorney has been selected as one of the choice morsels for the “machine gunners” upon which to train their weapons, loaded to the muzzle with dirty, slimy mud. They have attacked him in the most peruile manner, in a manner which would make any man, unless he had a wide saffron stripe down his back, quiver with shame. It is the reward of honest public office from a lot of mudslingers and back room plotters. Since the I. W. W. agitation, which shook Minnesota, the situation was seized upon like a leech in attempts to besmirch the county attorney and call attention of others to what he *“did” and “didn’t,” all in the name of petty, peanut politics, and in the nope of currying favor with the man ‘“higher up.” They rant and mouth about this and that, when these same individuals would starve to death if it was a case of theinselves occupying a public office, if value to the taxpayers were concerned. The last term of the district court demonstrated again what the county attorney has done for Beltrami county. The ability of the county attorney is not questioned. It is simply personal feeling and cheap politics, and everybody in the city knows it. : When Thomas Swinson took up the work of organizing the Home Guard under the Public Safety Commission, he and Roy Leibsle secured the subscriptions, organized the guard, bought the uniforms and did what was to be gone. The Home Guard is composed of leading citizens in Be- midji, men of standing in all lines of business. It so happens Mr. Swinson was commissioned by the State Public Safety commission as the captain of the company, he being a veteran of the Spanish-American war in the Phil- ippines. Then commenced the submarine campaign against Captain Swin- son. Every effort was launched for his removal to “let us have it.” Three or four even went to St. Paul as a “‘committee’ 'to obtain, if pos- sible, the removal of Captain Swinson. Why? Because Captain Swinson is the city engineer of Bemidji and has incurred the opposition of some of the “holier than thou” bunch in politics who couldn’t be elected flue in- spector. The game was to “‘get” Swinson, because the gang can’t run him. And the members of the Home Guard know it. City Attorney M. J. Brown is coming in for his. There are criticisms of the most petty nature on the part of the same individuals. Talk about & city attorney wearing a halo of “our bunch.” Ever hear any of the gang make any kicks before? Bet your life you never, but at the same time the people of the city were holding their noses. Dr. G. M. Palmer was appointed head of the Beltrami County Public Safety commission. Another crime, of course. Dr. Palmer was not one of the “old school.” He is too decent for the claquers to stomach. He has also been attacked and abuse heaped upon him from the day he was appointed. Why? Because ‘“‘us” can’t run the works and the ranters are peeved because they can’t do the driving. They hollered their heads conditions approximate those in our state. rived at a schedule of rates that wili be very fair and equitable. of what is termed a8 “Minimum Charge.” off, and an inspector came.to Bemidji because he said he had heard of | BEMIDJI ASTONISHED some differe: here. You will note that ome of the most radical changes is the establishment This means that although your meter may show that you have used only 7 Kilowatt-Hours during the meonth, and at 11¢ per KWH this would amount to 77¢, yet the least charge we will make ia $1.10. If however you shouid use 11 KWH then your bill will be $1.21 at the rate of 11 per KWH. That is, where your KWH con- sumption is greater than $1.00' no minimum will be charged. This mini- mum is & readiness to serve charge. In other words, if your KWH con- sumption during the summer months when the days are long is only 6 KWH, yet in the winter when the days are short your KWH consumption will run up to 16 KWH. This means that we have to be equipped to fur- nish you with your maximum demand. At all times we have to have boiler capacity, engine capacity, generator capacity, wire and transformer ca- pacity to furnish you with the greatest amount of current that you will use at any one time during the year. The main reason therefor for this min- imum charge is to take care of our investment in equipment that is neces- sary that we may at all times be in readiness to serve you. your require- ments. Aside from this, any fair minded person can readily understand that we cannot derive any profit from bills amounting to 9, 18 and 27c etc. We have héretotdr had ifdny decounts of this size.
