SMITH PHYSICIAN AND SURGEON Office Security Bank Bleck THINGS BY THEIR RIGHT NAMES - Phone 125 There seems to be a disposition in some quarters and by some people to whistle softly in the presence of people of German parentage, lest they become offended at aspersions upon their people and their practices. Many will even apologize for the action of this country in prosecuting the war, and will lightly pass over the atrocities committed by the German forces, that have shamed the right thinking peoples of the earth. This weak-kneed, pussy-footing attitude is unworthy any American. The world condemns the savagery of the German attacks on hospital ships, on fleld hospitals and on innocent non-combatants generally. There i® 'mo other name for their acts save inhumanity. Be‘ it saild to the ever- lastihg credit of the allies, no such actions have stained their records. We repeat that there is no call for pussy-footing when these things are mentioned because, forsooth, your bearer may have German blood in his veins. German blood is plentiful in America, and much of it is among the most loyal. That part which is not loyal is simply disloyal, and that is all there is to the matter. And furthermore, this country has no quarrel with German blood or even with German people, except so far as they up- J. BISIAR, Manager TOM SMART DRAY AND TRANSFER Safe and Piano Moving Res. Once their loyalty is demonstrated, it should be accepted in full faith. On the other hand, if their loyalty is of the right brand they will recognize the faults of their kinsmen, and while possibly not disclaiming those kins- men, they most certainly will disclaim any sympathy with them or their ambitions, especially with their acts. Let’s get this thing right on the start. The United States has no apology to make for its actions. This country is in the rignt, and those who do not like her course are at liberty to take thcmselves and their ob- jectiona to some other country—which would be the most uecent thing they could do. 4 ca. SANBORN PHYSICIAN AND SURGEON When the Republican state committee met at Minneapolis Friday to choose a member to fill a vacancy caused by the death of one of the com- mittee, Governor Burnquist had recommended a Minneapolis man, Fred H. Carpenter, who had the backing of Minneapolis Republicans. It seems that other Republicans who had longed to usurp the patronage of the state’s chief executive had become peeved over ‘their failure to handle the governor’s perogatives and presented the name of Senator Frank B. Kel- logg, who had previously stated in a letter that if his choice was not un- animous he didn’t wish to inject himself into committee affairs. The Kellogg adherents, who had sought to embarrass Governor Burn- quist because they were not allowed to distribute a little political ‘‘pie,” also contended for a secret ballot, instead of an open expression, and gained their point. And the strange part of it wa sthat the vote of Alderman Josiah Chase of Minneapolis defeated the Minneapolis man. The vote was 11 to 10. At the meeting was Thomas Ervin of Bemidji, a member of the state Republican committee. Mr. Ervin voted for Governor Burnquist’s recom- mendation, Mr. Carpenter, showing that the Bemidji committeeman is four square as a Republican and in line with the administration of the state which was chosen by the Republicans of Minnesota. You can’t judge it by the size of the can—or by the amount you get for your money. You must estimate it by the amount of baking powder #sed in each baking and the results you get. CALUMET is the greatest value ever offered in Baking Powder—it has greater raising “force”’—it goes further than most of the other brands. You use only a rounded or heaping teaspoonful where others call for two teaspoonfuls or more. But Baking Powder is not all you'll save when using Calu- met. You save baking mzalerials. Calumet never fails. The last level 1 is as powerful as the first. Calumet is perfectly manu- factured — keeps perfectly—and is teaspoonful moderate in price. You save when you buy it—You save whea you use it One trial will satisfy you of these facts—and demonstrate beyond doubt that “Calumet spells economy.” - Your grocer sells it on a guarantee of money back if you are not pleased with results, Calumet contains only such ingredients as have been approved officially by the U.
