Lane. Consul William P. Kent tells us that the tourist business in Switzerland, which is third in importance of all the Swiss sources of income, has been utterly ruined by the war. “Its ramifications are widespread and affect not only the hotels, in which large amounts of capital are invested, but also the transportation companies, the purveyors of food, the dealers in curious and the employment of labor.” We are sincerely sorry that disaster has thus overwhelmed the Swiss tourist trade. We should like to see every Swiss enterprise prosper. Am- erica has the very kindliest feeling toward that thrifty nation, for it has gent us some of our most thrifty and ustful citizens. Nevertheless, and without any selfishness or extravagant self-laudation, we feel constrained to remark that we have here in America all the essentials of a first-class tourist business of our own. In Yellewstone, Yosemite, Glacier, Crater Lake, Grand Canyon, Mt. Ranier, Mt. Hood. Mt. Shagta, Niagara, not to mention a thousand other attractions, we have a variety and extent of scenery which even Switzerland cannot attain. This has been known in a more or less vague way for many years. Secretary Lane made the information available in a very convenicnt and ample form by the publication of a portfolio of illustrated pamphlets which are distributed free to the American people. At great expense we have built roads and trails in our national parks. ‘We have arranged for the building of hotels which would provide food and shelter for ourists at prices limited by government regulation. Railroads have established convenient service and motor buses are ready to carry the traveler to points of interest. Switzerland has nothing to offer that cannot be had in equal excellence in our own fair land. Like the Swiss, we have hotels in which large amounts of capital have been invested, transportation companies, purveyors of food, and when the war is over we shall have labor seeking employment. Moreover, we shall have need of all the money we can get to maintain and extend our other industries. We shall have little to expend in Switzerland or any other country for things we can get at home. Therefore, all patriotic people—people who really and sincerely believe in “America First"—will plan to do their touring.in America, however much we may regret the misfortunes of Switzerland. _ Clear, natural, brilliant, true--these words are hardly enough to des- cribe it. Only one word can truly tell all that “Columbia tone” implies-- and that single word is: life! Ave. A PARTISAN DIFFERENCE Bryan's voice is now for war, and he declares that the citizen who now insists upon the right of “free speech” in criticism of the government is “a promoter of anarchy.” Bryan’s opinions have undergone a decided change. We are not now referring to that period when he sat in the cab- inet and when it was declared in his behalf that, so long as he was sec- retary of state, the United States would not go to war. We are referring to the period of his second campaign for the presidency, when ‘“‘anti-im- perialism” was his battle-cry, when the government was confronted by a serious and sinister revolt in the Philippines, and when Bryan, insistent upon his right of “free speech” and his license as a candidate for political office, was criticising the government and was ‘‘a promoter of anarchy” in Luzon, if not in Lincoln, Nebraska. No ome now is saying anything as severe about Mr. Wilson as the things which Bryan and his friends then said about Mr. McKinley. But it happens to be the ox of the Democratic administration which is now being gored by criticism. It certainly does make a difference who own the critter.
