B # | 'AMBULANCE MAN R FACED WAR PERILS O Ssvaral Occasions Nar- rowly Escaped. Death, TORPEDOES MISSED SHIP E. H. McCrahon, Veteranized hy His : Experience, Wants to Fight Now Un- ~der Old Glory—Says That Not Even :Dead Are Permitted to Rest In Their Graves In This Awful War. In the hope of winning an officer’s commission at Plattsburg Edward Howard McCrahon, twenty-four years eld, of Brooklyn, has arrived home aft- er serving since last May as an ambu- lance driver for the American: Red Cross on the French front.~ “Ever since America entered the war,” said young McCrahon, “I have felt that I could serve my country better on the actual fighting line rather than driving an ambulance. That s why I am now bere in an en- deavor to win a commission, that I may yeturn to the other side and help in the battle for world freedom and de- mocracy.” Before starting for the flghtiug front last April McCrahon was an inspector for the Acme Die Casting corporation ef Brooklyn. He brought back with him a wealth of stories of the fighting en the French front, . His First Thrill. McCrahon was hardly started on his military carcer before he saw action. He sailed on the French liner Rocham- beau on April 21. Sixty miles off the French coast, while standing with a * group of men at the port rail, he sight- ed a periscope. Almost at the same instant the wake of a torpedo was seen. The ship was swung over, and the torpedo passed about fifty feet astern. The submarine submerged, but again came to the surface, only to meet a volley of shells from the stern guns of the Rochambeau. A second torpedo passed harmlessly by. Wireless calls for help brought French destroyers on the scene, and the submarine disap- peared. “There is plenty of action drlvlng an ambulance,” said McCrahon, “but 1 am husky and in the flush of health, and I think I can serve better in an actual fighting unit. A man slightly erippled can drive an ambulance quite as well as a man with full physical qualifications. 1 think men slightly in- jured should be given the jobs of driv- ing ambulances. while those better able to do so takc up the burden of real fighting. “1 arrived in Bordeaux on April 30 and went inrmediately to Paris, where 1 was made an ambulance driver. After America's entry into the war I asked for my releage from the ambu- lance corps, and it was granted. 1 was discharged July 28. In that short time 1 suw enough to realize the horrors of modern warfare.” Confesses He Was Scared.” McCrahon has the courage to con- fess that on several occasions he was scared. But that creepy feeling which may be de- scribed as fright gradually wears off. Perhaps the experience which got my merve more than any other was a gas attack- With my assistant, a chap named - Witzel of Newark, we were en the road, I at the wheel driving. whlen four poilus popped out of the night and yelled ‘Gas!" [ shook like a Jeaf. I was semiparalyzed. But I pulled myself together and awakened ‘Witzsel just in time to don our gas masks. A few more seconds and we would have had our lungs full of the deudly stuff. The gas dttack lasted over half an hour, sweeping the wholo region. “I had another close call. Nearly dead of thirst from driving over dusty roads, 1 took a chance on a drink from a roadside well, although we had been advised against it. Nausea seized me almost immediately, and I was fright fully weakened. I was carried to a hospital, where I hovered between life and death for eleven days. 1 owe my recovery to the untiring attention of a Miss Levy, a trained nurse at one of the French base hospitals. “Usually in gas attacks warning is given by shrill blasts of a horn. Shell dodging comes as a matter of course. Those used to the ‘song’ of the shelis can tell almost within a few feet of where they will fail. The size of the Ahell can also be determined by its shriek, “I must say a kind word for the French officers. No matter what the surrounding conditions may be, they are always the perfection of courtesy. There seems to be a spirit of common brotherhood between the French officer and his men. Danger Lurks Everywhere. “It seems that not even the dead are to be permitted to rest in their graves in this awful war. Not far from St. Quentin a cemetery was within range of cross fire between a Canadian con- tingent and the German lines. The shells tore up the graves and scattered the bones in every direction. “It is dangerous to touch anything tound on the ground from which the Germans have retreated. To move a simple looking stick in the ground may mean the exploding of a mine. I know of a soldier who picked up a wrist watch lying alongside a wall. The act exploded a bomb on the other side of the wall, and the man lost both eyes. Ghe!
