CATHEDRAL CHOIR TO"SING OLD HYMNS AND ORATORIOS The Cathedral Choir is all that its title suggests—an interpreter ;t t; most ehieved £ beautiful religious music the world has known. No company has ever a more marked success than has this organization. The work of thes: . ¢ is a revelation to most listeners, carrying the.n to heights of musical and re- rtists ligious feeling. Each member has been chosen for his or her especial fitness for this particular type of organization, so that the Cathedral Choir as pre- ‘ sented is a brilliant company. PURPOSE AND PLAN Organizers of the Cathedral Choir believed that the grand old religious “ classics, the arias of sacred theme and the majestic hymns.of the church were : being neglected. They knew that, aside from their religious themes, the qual- ' ity of music presented in the best numbers of sacred musical literature has * never been surpassed. " GRAND OLD HYMNS ‘Who can measure the influence of these great songs in religious worship? % These songs have swayed the human heart and soothed the human spirit, through all the changing fortunes of national life and the shifting ideals ot civilization. They have not died because they are immortal. They have a ministry of unspeakable worth to perform down to the end of time. In this day of strife and bloodshed when old ideals are being swept away and we need the eternal Rock of Ages as never before, what ¢ould strengthen the faith more than to hear a company of superb singers ring out the stirring “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”? Or that favorite hymn of Cannon Liddon, “Oh God, Our Help in Ages Past.” In times like these such hymns come like the benediction after prayer—like the soft embrace of the first warm rain of REAL ARTISTS The Cathedral Choir 1s composed of nine people, including the accompanist’ The nature of the program is such that only artists could do it justice. These singers have strong native ability, refined and tempered by years of study Most of them have held responsible positions as soloists in big churches betor: becoming members of, the Cathedral Choir. . Blackhead Is One of the Most Destruo- tive of the Common Ailments. [Prepared by United States department of agriculture.] Turkeys are subject to most of the diseases and ailments affecting fowls. Of these the most common infectious diseases are blackhead, chicken pox (sore head) and roup. Limber neck and’ impaction of the crop are non- infectious ailments quite often found among turkeys. Of the parasites lice are the most injurious, especially among young turkeys, and unless some effective means has been taken to de- stroy them they can usually be found ‘on every turkey in the flock. . Of the infectious diseases, blackhead is the most destructive among tur- keys. This disease first became seri- The fllustration shows a method of preventing turkeys from flying over fences. A thin piece of wood is placed across the back and tied under the wings with soft strips of cloth. C ous in the New England states about twenty-five years ago. It has now spread to a greater or less extent throughout the middle west and is oc casionally found in the south and on the Pacific coast. Blackhead occasion ally affects grown turkeys, but it most 1y occurs among young turkeys be tween the ages of six weeks and fou: months. When a flock becomes in fected and uothing is done to preyen: its spread 50 per cent or more of the turkeys in the flock usually die. The symptoms of blackhead are such that unless the bird is killed and an examination of the internal organs made it is difficult to tell whether the disease Is blackhead or some other ail- ment. The bird drinks a great deal but refuses to eat and grows steadily weaker until its death, which usually occurs a few days or a week after the weakness Is first noted. Diarrhea commonly occurs, and the droppings vary in color from white to brown, but are usually a bright yellow. The head of the turkey sometimes turns dark and it is from this symptom that the name blackhead originated. This is an unfortunate term, as the head often does not turn dark, and even though it does it merely indicates that the bird is sick from some ailment that may or may not be blackhead. On opening a turkey that has died of blackbead one or both of the ceca, or “plind guts,” are found to be enlarged and plugged with a cheesy material, and the liver is more or less covered with spots, varying in color from gray- ish white to yellow, No positive cure for blackhead has been found. As in the case of all oth- er infectious diseases, the sick bird should immediately be removed from the flock {o prevent a further spread of the disease, and if very sick it is best to kill it and burn the body. Clean out the roosting place and spread lime in places most frequented by the tur- keys. Keep a disinfectant in the drinking water. Potassium permanga- nate is a good antiseptic, a sufficlent quantity of the crystals being added to give the water a wine color, which for every gallon of water will take about as much of the chemical as can be placed on a dime. If the turkeys are being fed heavily their ration should be reduced, as overfeeding predisposes to the disease. The feeding of sour milk has been found of advantage in keeping turkeys in good health and in reducing the activities of the organism causing blackhead. Liver Trouble In Poultry. Unless a postmortem examination is made the symptoms of thia ailment are misleading. A bird so afflicted is unmistakably sick, but it is difficult to distinguish this trouble from other forms of disease. When examined after death the liver is found to be greatly enlarged and filled with blood and so tender that it is easily torn. Tt is caused by overfeeding, too rich a diet or a ration unsuited to conditions. If it is suspected that the other birds in the flock are similarly affected cor- rect the ration, give plenty of green food and encourage exercise in the open air. AMERICANS BLAKRiNG BEAUTY IN WAR AREA Offer to Aid In Restoring Devastated Regions on New Lines. Ambassador Jusserand has forward- ed to the French and Belglan govern- ments a unique offer on the part of American students to aid-in rebuilding the devastated regions of those coun- triea as rapidly as the Germans are driven hack. .The.plan is. to,send “city beautiful” units of architects and engineers to Europe to reconstruct the ruined muni- cipalities along model lines in order that the war zone in France and Bel- glum may -emerge as one of the most beautiful regions in the world. Dr. Edmund Janes James, president of the University of Illinois, brought the offer to Ambassador Jusserand. The university at, Urbana-Champaign on July 1 will open a special city plan- ning school to train professional men for service in these units. -- " Each unit, Dr. James explained, will consist of an architect, a landscape architect, .an electrical engineer, a high- way civil engineer, a municipal and sanitary engineer, a chemical engineer and an economist. The training school, which will combine special courses of the university’'s school of architecture and its various engineering schools, will teach the co-operation necessary to make the building units effective. The course will last six months, at the end of which time it is hoped to send the first units abroad. Many profes- sional men are already enrolling for the training, Dr. James said. Forage For Pork and Mutton. Forage crops will materially. reduce the cost of producing pork and mut- ton. Do not attempt to grow young hogs on forage crops alone. Supple ment the forage with some grain. Brood sows can be kept on forage crops after the pigs have been weaned. Make as many pounds of gain as pos- sible from the use of forage crops. They will reduce the cost of such gain. e e LU DT U LT D LU UL TR T = WE HAVE THE LOTS What kind of a lot are you looking for? site? A location for a fine residence? cozy little home.
