Drilled corn has given higher yields than that planted i{n hills, the same amount of seed being used per acre. in experiments conducted at the Ohio experiment station. For corn planted fn hills three plants per hill have been most satisfactory. While drilled corn ylelded about three bushels more per acre than that planted in hills. it was found ruore difficult to cultivate and to harvest by hand. For machine cutting drilled corn is preferred. Silage For Dairy Cows. . Cows fed a ration composed largely of silage produced 17 per cent more milk and 28 per cent more butter fat than other cows fed chiefly on'grain in a feeding test at the Ohio Experiment station. The silage ration was consid- arably cheaper. ‘H-ving Eyes, Ho Saw Not. One day in summer a tourist drove hurriedly up to the home of Enos A. Mills at the foot of Iongs peak, leap- ed out and approached the naturalist. “Mr. Mills,” he said brusquely, “I have been told that there is fine scenery in Estes park. I want to get you to show me some of it.” The naturalist’s eyes turned toward the hundred mile sweep of snowy mountains that cut the blue sky, then swept the valley below and rested on noble crags and streams that wound among groves of pine and aspen. Slow- ly he shook his head. “I guess you must bave been misin- formed.”—Youth’s Companion, THEY ARE emfPun LEDGER TRANSFERS, But they’re so practical and durable that you can keep nearly all your records in them. THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER The Original Fruit Canners. We are indebted to Pompeii for the great industry of canned fruit. Years 2go, when the excavations were just beginning, a party of Cincinnatians found in what had been the pantry of a house many jars of preserved figs. One was opened, and they were found to be fresh and good. Investigation showed that the figs had been put into Jars in a beated state, an aperture left for the steam to escape and then seal- ed with wax. The hint was taken, and the next year fruit canning was in- troduced into the United States, the process being identical with that in vogue at Pompeil twenty centuries ago. —Exchange. Cultivate Your Wify’s Friendship. “A man’s best friend,” says Bulwer Lytton, “is a wife of good sense and good heart, whom he loves and who loves him. In woman there are at once a subtle delicacy of tact and a plain soundness of judgment which are rarely combined to an equal de- gree in man. A woman, if she be real- ly your friend, will have a sensitive 'regud for your character, honor and repute. She will seldom counsel you to do a shabby thing, for a woman al- ways desires to be proud of you. At the same time her constitutional timid- ity makes her more cautious than your male friend. She therefore seldom counsels you to do an imprudent deed.” Egyptian Smokers and Madness. An Egyptian smoker of hasheesh is even a more helpless slave than the Chinese opium fiend. He knows that in the end he will become a madman, yet he rushes toward the awful goal with unrelaxed speed. With the strange exaltation which first comes to the smoker he feels himself floating from cloud to cloud or alighting in the gardens of paiaces all his own. Most of the hasheesh which Egypt con- sumes comes from Greece. Krom the .husks of the hemp seeds and the ten- der hops of the hemp plant the Greeks manufacture a greenish powder whose fumes bring the ecstasy its victims desire. Shotgun eartridge wads made in France from granulated cork are said to lessen the recoil of guns in which they are used without impairing their efficiency.
