Mr. Neumann is on the army reserve list and he expects his call some time in July. He will stay at the home of his par- ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Neumann. until that time. McCall, who has been confined at St. Anthony’s hospital for the past month suffering from an attack of typhoid fever, was taken to her home Saturday. County Coroner Garfield Akerberg left this afternoon on official busi- ness for Blackduck. The report is that 2 man had been found dead in an old shack in that vicinity. Dr. J. W. Diedrich returned this morning from Crosby where he play- ed ball with Brainerd against that city. Dr. Diedrich says the game was a very interesting one, the score be- ing 8 to 8 in a ten-inning game. Charles S. Carter and daughter, Sylvia, of Hines were in the city to- day, enroute to Mille Lacs lake, where they have a summer home. Miss Carter graduated from the Be- midji high school this year. Miss Esther Hedeen of New Lon- don arrived in Bemidji yesterday morning and will attend summer school here. She will be the guest of her brother, John Hedeen, and wife during her stay in the city. G. D. Backus and daughters, Vera, Luella and Mrs. Eugene Voigt, Mr. Voigt and Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Denu went to Bootleg Lake today where they will spend several weeks camp- ing. Mr. Backus owns a farm near Bootleg Lake. Mr. and Mrs. William Haywood left last evening for Sioux Falls, S. D., where thney will spend the sum- mer the guests of relatives. Mr. Haywood has been ‘“makeup’” on the Pioneer for the past year. John Krause of Aitkin, Minn., will fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. Haywocd. James Curran, who for some time has been linotype machinist operator on the Bemidji Sentinel, left this morning on the Great Northern for Virginia, Minn., where he has ac- cepted a similar position on the Vir- ginia Daily Enterprise. Sam Web- ster, formerly with the Sentinel, has returned from the Twin Cities and will again take charge of the linotype work. Gertrude Mahler arrived in the city Saturday afternoon from Kee- watin where she has been attending school, Gertrude, who is only 12 years old, graduated from the eighth grade this spring and will be a fresh- man in the Bemidji schools next fall. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Mahler, who live north of Bemidji. Dr. and Mrs. David Tincker and baby of Chicago will arrive this eve- ning from Bemidji where they have been making a short visit and will make an extended stay with Mrs. Tincker's mother, Mrs. W. L. Da- vies. Mrs. Davies will also have as her guests her son, Harold Davies, and Mrs. Harold Davies of Fargo.— -| Crookston Daily Times. Rev. Karl Stromme left this after- noon for his home in San Francisco, 1 Cal., after a visit at the home of his wife’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Erickson. Mrs. Stromme and little daughter will remain in the city for the greater part of the summer, the guests of Mrs. Stromme’s parents. Rev. Bright, general attorney for the Soo Railroad company, of Min- neapolis, will speak on the Red Cross movement tonight in Bemidji. He will speak at the Elko theater in- stead of at the City hall, as formerly announced. No admission will be charged and the public is invited to attend. WILL ATTEND FUNERAL Mrs. C. M. Bacon and Mrs. J. H. Fallon will leave tomorrow for Moorhead where they will attend the funeral of their sister-in-law, Mrs. Tena Hetland, who died Saturday night from Bright’s disease. The fu- neral will be held Wednesday. She leaves two daughters to mourn her death, one aged 15 and the other 17. Her husband died about 12 years ago. TO SPEND SUMMER HERE Miss' Bertha Meilicke arrived Sat- urday morning from Morden, Mani- toba, where she has been visiting her brothers, Herman and William Meil- icke, for the past few weeks. Miss Meilicke will spend the summer in Bemidji as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Meilicke and Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Daniels. WITH CRACK INFANTRY Frederick N. Goodspeed, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Goodspeed of ‘Grant Valley, who enlisted at Kin- ney, Minn., on May 9, has been transferred to the Sixteenth infantry at Hoboken, N. J. Mr. Goodspeed was at first sent to the Jefferson Bar- racks and from there to El Paso, Texas. He says he enjoys a soldier’s life and the only drawback is that it takes so long for mail to arrive. MRS. STILLWELL GETS FREE SEWING MACHINE Mrs. H. 8. Stillwell who resides in Becida on star route was awarded the Free sewing machine Saturday afternoon which was given away by the Given Hardware company. So interesting was the demonstra- tion that the walk in front of the store was crowded as was also the store and street. It was a splendid indication of what good advertising will do. DIED FROM STROKE Beatrice Margaret Doran, who had been in poor health for the past year, died yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the home of her mother, Mrs. Lucy Hazen. She would have been 34 years old today. Her condition seemed no worse than it had been for the past year, until just a few minutes before her death. The fu- neral will be held tomorrow after- noon at 2:30 o’clock from the home at 209 Irvine avenue. Rev. Lester P. Warford will officiate. Interment will be made in Greenwood ceme- tery. MISS RIPPLE SHOWERED Misses Lillian French and Irene Lappan entertained at a shower for Miss Florence Ripple vesterday after- noon at the Fremch home. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. George H. French, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Opsahl, Mrs. John Ziegler, Mrs. Walter For- syth, Florence Ripple, Frank Good- speed, Ellen Neumann, Bertha Di- caire, Mae Erickson, Miss Salter, Mary Slivnick, Margaret Thome, Cathryn Merryman and Lottie French. Miss Ripple’s marriage to Frank Goodspeed will take place to- morrow morning in tne Catholic church at 9 o'clock. VAN ARNAM-HAZEN Miss Irma Lucille Hazen, daugh- ter of Mrs. Lucy Hazen of this city, and George Langdon Van Arnam, son of Mrs. J. L. Van Arnam, also of Bemidji, were married yesterday af- ternoon at the Van Arnam home at 3 o'clock. Rev. B. D. Hanscom, pas- tor of the.Methodist church, offici- ated. The ceremony was performed in the presence of immediate friends and relatives. They were attended by the bride’'s sister, Mrs. Charles Van, and the groom's cousin, L. K. Van Arnam, of Fargo, N. D. After the wedding a dinner was served at the Van Arnam home.
